My new raised pond
Hi, having seen on here some raised ponds with a window I really wanted one but the shop bought raised wooden pond I had, had the wrong type of liner so I sold that one on ebay ( didn't get the price I was hoping for so that limited how much I could spend on the new one) I put the fish I had in it into my large ground level pond and started to build a new bigger sleeper raised pond with a window, yeahhhh. It's 3.4m x 2.2m x 1.45m deep.
Of course with covid everything took longer to get delivered and it took me till late november to finish it.
As a pensioner I had limited funds so I know I won't impress everyone on here as I used my spare 20,000 filtoclear and an 11,000 lph pump.
Myself and more importantly the mrs. are very pleased with the finished product.
Few days ago I took four of the smaller ones in my ground level pond and put into the new pond, think they was sulking with the move until yesterday i received my new 5"-6" koi from CBF and must say I think they are beautiful and the initial four have really perked up.
Here are few pics.
Thanks for a great forum i've picked up many ideas etc.

Thanks guys for the compliments,If i was still working i'd of gone for 1 of the new rotary drum filters, bottom drain etc on my new build, talking of bottom drains my ground level pond which is 23 years old now has a 4" bottom drain and it's been and still is a nightmare for me,my gardens south facing and struggle with blanket weed all year round,
I use b/w killer then week after add sludge buster, infact i did a weak mix 2 weeks ago however the pump in my end vortex filter box system returns the water back to pond quicker than it receives it hence I have to turn the pump off for 10 mins while water level rises enough. Having worked at RR where we just chuck money at a problem till it's solved hence the reason I had spare filters and various size pumps etc.So after i've had enough I have to remove most of the water and get in pond and scoop out the debri in the bottom drain as it fills up with crud thus I suspect is slowing the outward water flow, any hints/tips etc would be much appreciated. I see the new b/d's have an airline feed which i suspect resolves this issue?

Have you the ability to purge the bottom drain - by this I mean open a valve which draws the muck out of the bottom drain with max water pressure the addition of a valve to allow this is a mistake my pond builders make. If not a rodding kit is the only other way while the pump is still running to try to disturb and remove as much muck as possible. What water turn over are you using on a 4 inch bottom drain as if not much a 3 inch drain might have been a better option

It sounds like the main issue is the excessive growth of blanket weed.
One way you could reduce this is by building a pergola over the pond. Or a sail shade? That should cut down on the amount of light getting into the pond, which should in turn reduce or at least slow down the b/w.
The other thing is, how often do you do water changes? If you don't do them enough, then you may be getting a build up of nitrates and phosphates in your water from the fish waste - and these are basically plant food. So more frequent water changes might slow down the b/w growth.
By the way, the new pond looks good. Your air seems to come up right in front of your window. It might make viewing the fish through the window better if you can move the air away from the window?

Thanks for comments,I must admit I don't do water changes enough, which I will rectify by writing a planned maintenance schedule,do you suggest weekly/fortnightly? suppose prevention is better than cure.
I've attached a pic of my filter set up, To purge I close off slide valve from B/D, empty vortex 2 or 3 times and rinse the brushes in the vortex twice then keep purging valve till clean water comes through.I can tell when the sediments in B/D decreases by how quickly the water comes through.
I/m using a 8000 LPH pump for returning to pond,is this adequate enough?
In the raised pond I will move airstone away from the window as you suggest, thanks, I've got 25mm polycarb sheets being delivered thursday so i can cover that one to try eliminate B/W growth and keep bit of warmth in.

In terms of water changes, I'd aim to do more in warmer weather and less when it's cold.
So maybe weekly in summer and fortnightly the rest of the time, for your established pond. In winter you might be able to get away with every 3 weeks.
Although whenever you do them, remember to dechlorinate the water.

No worries.
I built a pergola with 10mm bronze polycarbonate panels over my pond, about 1/4 - 1/3 of the pond gets direct sunlight. So far i haven't had an issue with b/w yet.
Although it's still only about 18 months in, so I shouldn't tempt fate.
