    Dfc1980 pond project 2021......

Finally in a position to plan my new pond, managed to keep my Koi set-up in a large pool at a relations house and they are getting on fine.

Still in the planning stage but cleared the old shed and will load plans on in due course, looking to start digging end of March.

Going for a bottom drain hollow block (filled), fibreglassed build with a Eazypod for main filtration and skimmer to moving bed for secondary, two returns, pond will be between 7500 - 8500k litres and around 8' x 8' x 5', going at end of garden in picture, going to have a front window also.

So it begins.............just wish Fred was still here to give his advice.

2000 gal ish is the same as mine and don't think a pod would do it like 220 and draco later would be a better shot a think

Going to reduce the depth to around 1240 (water depth) making volume around 7,255 litres, hope the eazypod deals with this better, would love to get a nexus 220 in their but just have not got the room, I am making a moving bed off of the skimmer also for more bio, will look at a drum in due course.

Window viewable area will be 1320mm x 645mm x 25mm toughend and laminated low iron glass.

Progress below, hope to have full design up on Friday

You will need some form of mechanical filtration from your skimmer, otherwise your moving bed will just fill up with crap.

A sieve gravity fed from the skimmer would work and then pumped to the bio

I am making the moving bed myself and will be incorporating a screen into it to filter mechanically, submerged pump will be on a float switch.

Have you thought of a bead? Bit out of fashion nowadays but in a whole different league to a easypod and similair or slightly smaller size. Will filter 5 times that of an easypod and you wouldnt even need the moving bed. 250 quid max for a good second hand one, sieve first then bead, job done. And you'll have no fines, which an easypod wont deal with.

Yeah don’t go for an easy pod if you’re planning to keep koi. Would just about do the job for goldfish in that volume.
There is no volume koi pond that a Pod is suitable for as the sole mechanical or bio filtration I’m afraid.
Some people use them successfully on the skimmer line if they have a decent filter on the bottom drain.

If space is tight then none of the EA filters are a very space efficient way of doing it. A small combi drum or a drum followed by a bio chamber would be so much better. You can gravity feed one filter from both your bottom drain and skimmer to avoid duplication also.

    Update.

After your comments I am going to build a PP RDF, still in design stage, purchased Plastic welder, got PP supplier and have sourced component parts including electrics, lot involved but looking forward to the challenge.

Still digging and finalising design, RDF design nearly there, purchased majority of parts.

Question.......is a skimmer really needed? all evergreens near me so no probs with leaves etc, should I put one in? I don't really like the look of them TBH.

I'd also say go for a skimmer.

I turn mine off (at a ball valve) when feeding to avoid any pellets going into the filters.

Sometimes I forget to open the valve again and after a few hours without a skimmer the amount of dust that collects on the surface is remarkable.

Plus it's good to remove any of the fish poo that floats as soon as possible. Rather than having to wait for it to sink and then make it's way to the bottom drain.

    Hi,
I’m glad I have a skimmer on my pond to be honest.
It does keep the surface clear.
Can you place it out of sight?
    Cheers
    Ady

100 % have a skimmer, My pond surface has no leaves anymore like it used to so always 'looks' clear, but I cleaned my ultra sieve last night, and first thing this morning you would not believe how much gunk has cam into it already, for me they are a MUST HAVE
