That was what I was thinking.
I just hope that does actually kill everything off, as parasites seem to be bomb proof.

Would do as Aj said a massive dose of pp and it's cheap enough.
I know a guy who has a few holding tanks and when he empties them he cleans them with bleach and puts a whole bottle in
Says he has never had any problems with useing it.John

Thanks John.
Think I'll go with a pp overdose. As it's for k1 I imagine it may take a lifetime of rinsing to get all the bleach out of the nooks and crannies.

I've cleaned out tanks out with beach and letting them air dry off is the best and had no problems as you say could be a right bugger on k1 and to me I wouldn't risk it

For peace of mind and given the difficulty in getting rid of flukes, think I would just get some new media.

The only thing is, I will probably be adding fish with parasites to the qt. So no point spending £40 for new media which may end up housing parasites anyway. Plus I have a bit too much media in my moving bed filter on the pond, so seems silly not to use that stuff.
My thinking is if the only thing with parasites is the fish i.e. the Qt and filters are free of them, it should make it easier to eradicate them, if I treat them as soon as the fish go in. Whether it works like that, I'm not sure.

Makes sence to me mate are you going to treat the water before fish go in in that case

Well it's still a way off from being completed. So want to sterilise the k1 and get fishless cycling going for now.
In the meantime I want to nuke the pond to get rid of this bloody Trich, and will probably have to treat for flukes too, as I'm pretty sure I saw one on a scrape recently
Then hopefully when that is done, I'll get a couple of the fish in the Qt as a couple of fish have raised scales from all the flashing. I intend to heat the Qt and salt to 0.3% and get them recovered and grown on a bit and then back in the pond before winter comes around (before it all starts again

So I filled up my Qt today. In total, including filters, it's 1,300 litres. Not bad considering I made it smaller than I really wanted just so it won't take up the entire garage.
The tank itself seems watertight (thank god after all the effort I put into making it), but there is a leak on a rubber boot connecting the 3" bottom drain pipe to a midi sieve.
Any ideas or suggestions what to do about the leak?
It's a brand new boot (3" to 4") and I've tightened the jubilee clip up as much as it will go, but it still leaks???

Thanks Sam. I'll drain the sieve down and will give PTFE a try.
I really do hope it's just the seal between the boot and outlet. I got the sieve secondhand so hope I've not ended up spending all that money on a leaking filter
I have to say the sieve is not as well designed as I thought it'd be. The floating weir tends to stick, rather than glide up and down with the flow. And the top of the wire mesh is under a supporting cross piece. So Ill be having difficulties getting the screen out to clean it.

So after all the mucking about with cleaning used K1 and fixing the leak on the rubber boot, I now have my tank up and running.
I had a go at fishless cycling. And although I was doubtful it'd work, it actually did.
I dropped some ammonia in and the water read as 2mg/l. Two days later that dropped to 0mg/l (I tested using two different test kits to be sure).
And the nitrite read as 2mg/l shortly after and that then dropped to zero. And the nitrates have started to creep up, currently around the 20mg/l mark. So it seemed to work well!
I got my 600watt aquarium heater up and running and that seems to be holding the temps up well without it coming on much.
As a last minute addition, I added jump guards from some scrap 10mm polycarb I had laying about.

So the first addition for the tank was a Shiro utsuri I bought from Gatwick koi in July. However when I pointed to the fish that I'd paid for Gary assured me it wasn't that one as that one was much more expensive (it was only when I got home did I find the photos that I took at the time of sale).
Anyway I picked one I liked and he ended up throwing one in for free as it has a small bit of Beni on a cheek. So I now have two Shiro Utsuris in my Qt.
I'd picked the one with a lot of white around the shoulder as I could just make out some more Sumi that will hopefully come through as the fish grows.
I just hope now that the light I have over the tank will be enough to sustain the colours in the fish whilst I grow them on.

I'm the same in terms of the two fish. But I think the one lacking Sumi has plenty more to come through. So I picked that more on how I thought it might end up looking. Bit of a gamble. But not bad for £225.
In terms of the Sumi, I don't like big blocks of it. So although he netted some with much better skin quality, I prefer to have smaller alternating or symmetrical lines of Sumi, bit like on a perch.

There's not much to report on the DIY moving bed.
It's a wham box (think it's 135 litres) that your recommended. With 40litres of k1 from my pond.
Inlet is just a 1.5" waste pipe that flows in through the top.
Outlet is 2" waste pipe, that I connected with a threaded tank connector, with a bit of sealant on, that comes out near the top of the tank (although not too high, I wanted to allow enough air space above the waterline so I don't get any water or k1 spill out if an air stone is sat on the inside edge of the box).

Here's the inlet. Literally two elbows to create an upside down u bend. And I cut a hole in the lid to accommodate it.
I put a pipe clip on the upright bit of pipe as I guess it's heavy when full and only attached to the pump via a rubber boot.
I also attached a union halfway way between the pump and mb tank (but above the pipe clip). I'd recommend doing this, as it makes it very easy to take the lid off without fiddling about with the rubber boot on the pump.
