Plumbing my ASHP was by far the most complicated bit in the whole koi pond pipework mash up for me. Controversially, I opted not to use a bypass, and just put a BV on the line feeding the shower from the T off the pump (other fork of the T feeds the ASHP). To regulate flow I just let more or less water go to the shower, which forces more or less water through the heat pump. If I need to remove the heat pump for any reason, I'll just close the BD valves and lose a bit of water. Means I can also bypass the shower altogether if I need to (and is generally recommended in winter due to the chilling effect). Next year I'll redo my plumbing 'properly' as I revisit my filter house, but it works for now

That looks a tight squeeze for sure inside, I have to agree the ASHP was a bit of an arse for me too, it runs great now but not sure how it will be in the winter, a tad more insulating of external pipes to do yet and likely a drop on insulated cover for the ball valves.

No leaks! Hooray! Will soak test over night and then turn the heat pump on tomorrow. No point trying to heat initially over night.

So heat pump is now up and operational. Holding 20 degrees with ease. It’s pretty quiet too.

Well, I haven’t decided. But probably just extend the summer abit and then bring temp down and give them a mini winter mid jan I think for 4 weeks. Then back up.
Ponds at 19 this morning, not sure why it hasn’t maintained at 20. It’s set to 20. I might need to check the threshold.

Heat pumps usually have a 1C hysteresis. So if you don’t want it to fall below 20C set the stat to 21C basically.
Some people worry about this big a fluctuation, but it’s way less than the koi would experience in most unheated ponds with warm days and cool nights so I personally wouldn’t worry about it.2016 new 6000 gallon pond

This from Manky Sanke (Syd) is a brilliant primer on heating. Apologies if this has already been posted elsewhere.

Bowl up and measure up today of all fish.
Glass clean and a bit of a clean of the drum. Amazing how much gunk stays in the waste shoot.
Loving the scales on my black Chag, 7cm of growth since May. All fish have put on between 3cm and 10.

Also this small chag has put on 7cm and looking really nice.
Dam I need to love some fish on. Will likely wait to next year now.
Pond is currently at 19.5 and ordered poly carb for delivery for Friday.

Running heater at low temp?
Covering the pond with polycarb should be enough to stop water temps dipping below 6C for the most...
