New House, New Pond.
So its finally the time where i can start thinking about building a new pond. I am hoping to go Rectangle, concrete block, partially raised with a window and fiberglass lined.
I am looking about 4.5m x 2.3m external dimensions. Toying between 1.2m and 1.5m deep and being 80cm above ground with a 3M x 70cm window.
I am looking for a contractor to come in and do the messy part, dig a hole, remove soil, concrete slab with a bottom drain and then do the block work. I will pick up from there.
I have had 1 quote so far, £5500 for 1.2m deep and £6500 for 1.5m deep.
Not going to lie, but the price shocked me a little. Can anyone add any insight into these costs, whether or not they are excessive or about right.
Many thanks

having somebody do it all for you and quickly as i did, that seems about right.
My pond is 4.5m x 3.7m x 1.7m.
The hole was 1.3/4m deep, then after sub base and concrete, works out around 1m in the ground.
My build is similar to what you are thinking about.
I documented the build here - https://www.koiforum.uk/pond-constru...thes-line.html

The costs really add up, its the pipe work that shocked me. This is just for the build, i still have the filter house to fit out yet.

Working out my next set of costs with fibre glassing, windows, filters etc. I think i will be near 18k to complete it how i want it.

Hope this helps and does not scare you off.
I cant wait for the winter to be over so i can crack on.

It does seem high to me. I can't see how they can justify charging a grand to dig out and remove an extra 3m3 of soil.
What's the location and access to the spot like?
For example if it's a long way from your driveway, or access is limited then this could potentially push the cost up e.g using cranes to get diggers in, using machines rather tha barrows to transport the soil to your drive, pumping the concrete instead of barrowing etc...

Ah, just realised it included block work too. So not too bad then.

The costs given are purely digging, and building work. This includes nothing pond related ie bottom drain, pipe work etc. That will be supplied by me.
Thanks for your cost breakdown.
I am waiting back for a few more quotes.
The fish don't look particularly happy in there swimming pool at the moment.

Access is great, we are a corner plot, so a grab truck can be used and a digger can be driven straight in. Location is in Swindon, Wiltshire.

I have to say having done all of that work myself on my build, I don’t think that price is excessive
In fact, I would definitely not do the job for that little haha.
I think I spent £1200 on grab lorries alone!
Ideally you should find out the details of what he’s quoting for- such as what grade concrete is that for, and do you need a concrete pump for it, will there be rebar in the base, is he going to use a compacted hard core base underneath it, what strength mortar mix is he planning to use on the walls? etc. etc.
One bit of advice I would give anyone in your position at the outset like this is to be very careful who you listen to with respect to the strength of build needed. Builders build things where all the weight is downwards on the walls, they are usually not used to building something where there is an enormous amount of pressure bearing outwards on the walls particularly at the bottom. They will likely think that you are over-specking what you ask for, but the price of a future failure is quite disastrous so it needs to be got right first time.2016 new 6000 gallon pond

Luckily the builder I was speaking to had build a concrete block pond before. But i did go over the need for rebar, blocks on the side etc which he understood.
Might be back to the drawing board, OR i get my hands dirty and try and do a big chunk of it myself.

I was trying to save time with the hope to have a carcass done before spring ready for fiberglass. Driving a digger around does sound quite appealing though.

Personally at that price I’d bite his hand off if the spec is correct, that’s not expensive.

Could you not dig it out yourself with a digger.
I did all mine on my own, digger was £70 for first day and £30 for the second day.Thought I would do it in 1 day but it took me ages to get the hang of it the digger was going all over the place, been driving 40 ton trucks all my life but the digger was a challenge.
You could hire a guy with a digger to do it then you get a grab truck and you do the base then get some brickies in for the blockwork.
So you would be splitting it up into sections, mine is 4 x 3 mtrs 4ft deep and it cost around £2300 up to incl the glassing that's is doing it myself and shopping round for the cheapest blocks concrete etc.
There is a big difference in prices for materials out there.
I found the easiest way was dry stacking 9ins hollow blocks which was done in a day.John

Hi YMC,
I’d be very happy to supply you a non obligatory quotation for all things pond (non building) I.e Pipes, valves, pumps, connections, filters, UVs etc... if you send me your shopping list I can confirm ASAP to you.
I do have a website, however that only has a small proportion of the equipment I can source/ supply due to the time required to populate and maintain.
I’m sure I can save you some money...
Cheers

Sorry Graeme, i know how us spreadsheet junkies are frowned upon sometimes. I hope it didn't hurt too much
and this is just the start, running costs, getting carried away looking for that perfect tancho, convincing the family into a trip to Japan to look at fish rather than Disney land.....

I do like a good spreadsheet. But I cant help myself not knowing what every project costs to the last penny, Sometimes I wish I didn't keep a spreadsheet[s].
