new pond 2020
Hello everyone.
I've just started my journey into the koi world, my dimensions are 4m by 2.4 and 5ft deep thats 2ft in ground 3ft above by my calculations should be about 3000 gallons. At the moment it is still just a hole in the ground. The bottom drain has arrived so hope to get base poured in a couple of weeks weather permitting (not looking to fill it till spring unless we have a really mild winter) I am after advice regarding filter sizes whether I go for a nexus or a drum also if anyone has done a corner window.

Go drum if you can, water clarity and ease of maintenance is unreal

I have a similar volume , I always wanted a koi pond with a Nexus, so we built one in the spring as a lockdown project! We've kept many many tanks for years and previously had large natural ponds with koi and the usual outdoor coldwaters.
I installed a N220 auto, 24 inch EA bead to waterpolish have a 55w UV and a heatpump.
The pond is great and the fish are a delight. The new pond syndrome wasnt fun but was survived !
Im changing the lot for a drum and separate bio , I cant get a combi to drop in, pretty much the same as @koiz. She did her homework !
I did not do my homework.
I asked my very reliable dealer for all the gear and he duly supplied it unquestioning as I know my tanks and I know my fish.
What I spent on the Nexus with Auto and the bead and the UV would have been the same as a decent commercial drum bio and amalgam.
No doubt about it, my mistake, my money, my lesson learned until the next screw up !
Buy a drum now rather than later.
Jim
ps There will probably be a pristine nexus 220 auto and probably a bead filter for sale in my area in the not too distant future , but Bt35 9rf isn't really in the even semi accessible countryside.

Yeah, I would also highly recommend you go drum right off the bat despite the higher cost of doing that. Ultimately it’s cheaper to do it right the first time, and if the budget doesn’t allow it, your best bet would be to simply wait and save up.
With any new pond build though make sure you get the basics right and other stuff can always be changed or upgraded later.
The basics are IMO:
- big enough (this is the most common reason for people having to rebuild later
- bottom drain(s)
- skimmer, preferable gravity fed to filters, in-wall
- filter house/shed with water supply, electricity and mains drainage
- pond overflow fitted somewhere, whether it is in the skimmer, the pond wall or one of the filter chambers
- mid-water returns, even if you went for a shower2016 new 6000 gallon pond

So 3k gallons is 13k litres roughly. Pond turnover should always be under 2 hours, but it’s best to make sure your spec would allow for under 1hr (say 30 mins) so you have plenty of leeway. So basically a flow rate of between 13k and 26k lph.
This gives you a starting point of where to look with drums etc.2016 new 6000 gallon pond

Hi Sils,
Welcome to Koi keeping (well hole keeping for a bit ).
I would be very happy to help you source materials when you decide what you want your set up to be.
For me the essentials are:
FG
BD
Variable pumps
pressure pipework
Swept bend
Skimmer
Tommy Drain
Drum
submersible UV
bakki shower(S) with BHM
K1 moving bed or Japanese matting chamber
Brands may be determined by budget as some products can vary significantly
Cheers
GazHobby and business gone but when you’re hooked you’re hooked.
Always happy to help!!

Welcome
You have already received a lot of good advise already. If I were you I would be looking at 2 bottom drains on a 4m x 2.4m.
I’m sure I have read the effective pull on a bottom drain is 1.6m
A oase profi combi drum imo are the most compact options as they have the pumps/ motor housed within. Parts can be expensive but I have rarely seen any issues with them and you can find they used with good discounts. I picked mine up for 1.3k I have the premium and the individual moving bed module rather than the combi , new this would have been around 3.7k
