Thread: New pond cost?

    New pond cost?

Hi, I've kept koi many years ago, but I've lost touch with the cost of building a pond. I'm hoping for a 2m by 4m and 1.2m deep brick built fibreglass pond with a bottom drain and maybe a nexus 220 filter. I would like it to be about half below ground level. I've been quoted 10.7k which I think is a little high, but I'm no expert. Does anyone have any comments please?

I've just had one built in the summer, 5 x 2 x 1.5 for materials, labour, glass and fibreglass cost me around 5k I already had the filters hope that helps. I'm down in Essex and think I was slightly ripped off on the building materials by the builder.

To be fair I got a builder to build the structure and a glasser to glass the pond. I had some friends help dig and get rid of the soil and done the plumbing myself but even with that I wouldn't expect that to have cost double what I paid. Definitely worth getting extra quotes. Also depends what filters they are supplying as I know these can soon add up and become expensive

    Hi mate.

The pond structure is more of a building project and FG (Ken on here will be able to advise) could be approximated reasonably accurately when measurement are finalised.

Filters in particular vary significantly in terms of pricing and quality. I would be happy to provide you an alternative equipment price if you are able to confirm what you require. I would also be very happy to give opinion on what is being recommended and options for alternatives if suitable.

Looking at the measurements provided the pond would be around 2200 gallons which may be a stretch for a Nexus 220 in isolation. Nexus can often be found in good condition second hand Which could be a consideration and save you around 600.

Many will vouch on here I have saved money whilst offering non pushy service and advice best to the customer not the til.

Happy and willing to assist if I can.

    Cheers

Thank you for your replies, I've had a further negotiation and got the quote down to 9k which seems reasonable when compared to the 5 plus vat per gallon guideline.

Ken - how fat would you travel for a pond FG? I often get asked by customers who I can recommend and the chap I did use has retired...

That does sound more reasonable. I would say that 5 plus VAT per gallon is high and would be a Rolls Royce pond.

I'm currently near the end of my build (hopefully). It's nearly 20,000 litres (4,200 gallons). All in, including digging foundations, disposal of soil, concrete, blocks, building labour, fibreglass, etc, I'm coming in around €12k (10.5k). Filter will be on top of that at around 3k.

Although I'm in Ireland, I would have thought that prices are roughly similar in the UK if not cheaper.

The issue in the UK is finding someone prepared to actually do the work.
Having built all my own ponds I have to say that I would never do it for anyone else at any price
If you want someone to take on the entire project then I think it’s more than reasonable that it would cost at least twice the ‘cost price’ of doing it all yourself with all that entails.

    New pond cost?

Ive just finished building mine (I did a thread in pond building diaries: my first pond).

    It is 2.3 x 2.1 internal by 1.4 deep.

Fiberglass cost me 1080 (including materials) for installing cellotex and installation of 4 pipework to my drum filter from BD and skimmer.

I had a landscape gardener dig out and build the pond in 4 block.

He also built my old coal shed up to the new height with reclaimed bricks and fitted a new felt roof.

Built a rendered concrete block raised planter approx 5 meters by 1.1 meter

5 raised borders including supply and install of around 80 oak sleepers.

    Soakaway for the pond

Around 50 square meters of Indian sandstone

16 closed board fence panels with concrete posts and gravel boards raised up to height of new beds.

    And a new lawn.

Total cost for his work was 13.5k

    Drum filter 1k

The rest of the pond stuff including bio filter, pipework etc. I have done myself and Ive probably spent another 1k on all the bits.

    Hope that helps.
