Patio Sealer for around my pond

    Hi
My pond has a slate patio around it that needs sealing. Everything is sloped to run away from the pond but am trying to find a stone sealer that is safe if any did happen to make its way into the water. Any suggestions or is it as simple as finding a solvent free one?
    Thanks

It’s not easy to find a sealer suitable for slate- because it’s totally non porous and things don’t stick to it. But that also means you don’t need to seal it- because the surface is not prone to getting water ingress, moss etc.
Why were you wanting to seal it? Just to give it a ‘wet look’?

    Hi
Yes its just to make it look good really it covers most of the garden and pond is right in the middle of it so not really any way of leaving around the pond untreated.

G4 paint in clear would be safe once dry for the fish. The only thing is, it could be slippery in the wet.
You could also have issues with lack of porosity in the slate not allowing the G4 to be very long lasting.

Thanks for that link, not sure it's for slate, I read it as a wood treatment !

Bit misleading prices, quoting as Jerry-can with price of 1 lt

Bookmarked for next year treatment of my sleepers.

I emailed them and told them exactly what I need it for and they came back almost instantly with a yes, So unless anyone here tells me its pants I'll be ordering some to give it a try

Water based sealants are generally less problematic to apply but have a lot less longevity and often require repeat applications - sometimes annually. I highly recommend you do some patch testing first before setting out to apply to your whole patio. Ideally if you have some slate left over, use that for the test.

Its worth taking some time to have a good read around this website. I learned an awful lot from it when I was doing my refurb project:

Hope this is helpful Patio Sealer for around my pond

Sorry but slate is not "totally non porous" it flakes and displays delamination like every rock metamorphic, igneous or sedimentary rock. It's not uniform throughout.
Just add weather and water. That's before one even delves into whether it's a hard slate or soft slate. They're all still pretty hard mind you.

Sealants are all short term, usually solvent / oil based even the matte finishes.

You simply cannot seal outside stone and be done with it.

Weather and UV will do their thing.

2 packs are bomb proof but highly toxic.

There's a lot to be said for a powerhose and careful use of dairy hypochlorite but carefull and assuming you've got the correct falls.

Stone oils are just that, oils, generally incompatible with most aquatic organisms. You can use Danish oil in the kitchen on worktops but I'm sure it would nuke the fish.

Will have to agree to disagree Jp, my slate patio and coping stones are completely waterproof with no sealing. I actually used a cement and SBR slurry to lay them onto the mortar bed because they are notoriously difficult to get to stick to things.
Slate can be cleaved along its planes, but that’s not what we are discussing here
