How do you have your drum way below the water level??? Surely when the pumps are turned off it would overflow?

I have dropped mine to as low as it will go I think as water just ticks over the waste Shute when the pumps are off

this is what i mean, study the photo, you will see the inlets are way below the water line, and the internal drum is 3/4 submerged meaning it can pull in far more water from 1 bottom drain, i couldnt do this with my last drum filter due to it sitting approx 14" below 119055727_758445864953915_8084016033806283165_n.jpg

Only thing that might be causing an issue is I did change from a UV to am alamgam which is installed in the bottom drain pipework....would that reduce flow as they are pretty slim?

Do you still have a dirty bottom Rapley? Bottom not clearing or has tweaking the skimmer managed to clean it up?

Afraid not. Still bad with several changes

I am going to take the alamgam out of the bottom drain pipe and see if there is any weed or blockage and maybe remove it for a week and see if it improves

Moved the amalgam UV from the bottom drain pipework to the skimmer pipework so will see how that goes with a reduction on the skimmer flow using the ball valve and air 24/7.

Daft question but won’t the amalgam damage the drain pipes unless they are uv stable?

Possibly but the pipe it sits in is only about 18 inches long and connected either end with rubber boots so will change it out every 12 months or so

Oh right, hadn’t turned my brain on properly and had visions of you in the bottom of the pond in your trunks (not actually vision obviously), wrong drain I guess

Certainly seems to have increased the flow on the bottom drain side of the drum inlet which is positive....here’s hoping it helps

Is your bottom drain aerated ?

I have an L shaped pond and dirt can accumulate in certain areas . However , as soon as I put the BD air on , the dirt gets sucked into the drain . I have to be fairly precise on how fast the air is running . Its all to do with getting the flow right . If you do have an aerated BD , try altering the air flow . If not , try an air disc on top of the BD .

Also , if you have even a small amount of blanket weed on the bottom , this will stop the waste flow - and in turn feed the blanket weed !

    Hope you get it sorted

No aerated drain so I dropped a diffuser on top. I am using a 50 Lph air pump...do you think this is too much?

No blanket week than fully, spent the spring and summer using resolve and eventually added a pergola and poly roof and completely weed free now

I will feed for a day or two and see how it is as I cleaned the bottom yesterday to start fresh again after the changes

50LPH doesn't sound excessive , but it`d be worth reducing your flow by venting some off , to see if you can get a flow that works . Its also possible you may need more air ! Mines a 100LPH , and I probably have it running at around 60 to 70 (at a guess) to clear the pond floor , then reduce it down for normal operation .

Thanks for the info. Had three feeds today and so far pond is completely clear.

I remember why I went for a drum now!!! Water is looking so much better so it must have been the amalgam in the bottom drain line effecting the draw......hopefully

I will give it another day or two and make sure it stays clear and can then play around with air flow and operating times

I have a hi-blow 40xp on my bottom drain and id say that was too much air if anything. But it does keep the bottom clear.

But then again hi-blow rate their output at a certain depth rather than at water level so a 40 could be comparable to a 60 with another manufacturer.

When it's on the smaller fish go whizzing past the window lol. Fortunately I don't have it on for very long.

Sounds like you might've cracked it.

Waste sitting on the bottom again!!!! I have changed from an air ring to an air disc as it seems to pump out more air and will see how that goes but as there is more air can’t see the fish!

Do you have air on a timer and for how long and when? Does the waste just build up and then air comes on and clears it?
