Flowcoat issues
Hi all,
I’ve just finished my first attempt at fibreglassImg my pond after removing the old leaking grp lining and was really pleased with the results, until we applied the flowcoat The first mix went really well and has cured spot on, I decided to increase the amount that was mixed in the next pots but for some reason didn’t increase the catalyst in any of them! I only realised my mistake after the first part had cured and the rest was still wet. It’s taken about 12hrs to cure at 1% but has shiny spots where the wax hasn’t risen.
Is anyone clued up on what I can do to reapply the flowcoat? Short of taking a grinder to it. After 10 years of trouble with it I think that would probably finish me off with ponds.
Regards Mark

Clean it down with acetone
sand it down a bit to provide a key for your new coat
Give it a wipe down again with acetone then flowcoat again
please note not a fiberglass expert but recently fiberglassed my pond with a few little problems like yours but all fine now.

Have a read here mate:

Although slightly different in that my problem was the actual flow-coat itself and not my mixing, the fix should be the same.
Ken came and re-did mine after Id given it a light sanding over with 40 grit paper.
This should be fine for you also as long as you haven't let water get near it already.
Up to you if you want to attempt it yourself but I couldn't face it after the first failure and got the experts in.

Thank for the replies,
I had phoned the supplier and although there was no tacky spots, some colour would come off when wiped with acetone. He said to sand it all back to the glass, which is what i've been doing for the last few days. There has been no water near this fibreglass.
Ken can i now stop sanding it back quite so hard?
I havent been washing it with acetone before sanding as he advised only washing down before reapplying the flowcoat. I shall start doing that.
Hawk i'd love to get an expert in to finish it off but everyone seems to be busy at the moment and the fish need to be out of their temp home before weather starts getting too cold.

Nice one, Ken.
Just goes to show that it is possible to fibreglass ponds for a living without treating well-meaning hobbyists and potential customers with contempt
