And so it begins - Going down and building up :)

So for the past few weeks I have been planning how my new pond will be, I have a general plan that I expect to change slightly as the work progresses, but here is the main plan
    • CURRENT POND
      • Irregular, semi natural pond with Koi, common carp, Lillie's on planting shelves, timber bridge and horrid nets - Circa 30' x 12' x 3' deepest
      • Oase swimskim 50 floating skimmer
      • Running pump fed Nexus 220 > EA 110 uv - circa 4,000gal

    • NEW POND
      • Digging deeper into the larger end of old pond footprint
      • 2 Bottom drains 4"
      • Building up with concrete blocks > 3 windows > 50mm Kingspan > Fibreglass
      • Drako Solum 25 and Large Bio on the BD's > EA 20k vari-pump > 110 uv > 2 x 2" returns
      • In wall Skimmer 4" into Ultrasieve 3 > EA 20k vari-pump 'maybe into the nexus 220' 2" into 1m blade and bypass into 2" high return
      • Lose the common carp, frogs and sort through the homegrowns and work out what they are
      • Keep to Koi only and maybe just 1 big carp and my super friendly ghost carp (I think that is what he is )

So far I have been planning what kit to change, with a lot of advise from the guys on here, what to get, ordering stuff and planning to start the works in September , well not long now

During the planning and ordering of the main kit to ensure timely delivery, I have done a few bits of Preperation
    • Upgraded to consumer unit in the garage that feeds the current garage, store, pond and shed, to 18th edition and all circuits onto ICBO's
    • Added new rotary isolators and increased cable size from the board over to the already in place 4mm armoured cable feeding the current kit
    • Added additional sockets in my external utility room and improved the lighting too so that:-

LAST WEEKEND > I set up a small quarantine set-up at last, I have wanted to for a long time to have something permanent and with the wife's blessing I have taken over more of the external utility room (that was 50% pond stuff > into 90% pond stuff) rather than struggling with tubs as and when as I have in the past, its only a 500 ltr unit, but all in, insulated with celotex and have a cockney koi mega box/18w UV on it.

TODAY > I have been building a bit of a platform on the lawn to put the 'temporary Pond' onto, as the area I am putting it is on a small slope, so to ensure I get the maximum water in I have built a 3/4 circle that takes away most of the slope...

TOMORROW > I want to finish the platform, erect the pool, anchor it down and prepare the temporary pipework that will be required for Long runs of pipework to keep the existing kit running the temp pond (HOPEFUL:LY)

THURSDAY > Bulk bags of Type-1, Ballast and Cement being delivered

FRIDAY > I plan to pump the pond water into the temp holding, do the pipework quick change and move all the fist > Koi into the big pool and the Carp in the quarantine unit ready for collection.

    SATURDAY > Mini-digger time <banana dance>

So here is the old set up for the nexus side of thing - nicely hidden in the hedge

Here is the set up with the old 55 uv which for some reason started to struggle with the heat/green for the first time...

And here is the early upgrade (got the UV in ready for the new pond, put this in to see how it worked and it did a GREAT job, cleared the bond to its best for a good while....

But my God it was a tight fit and I had to cobble together some fittings to work until it gets moved onto my new 2" pipework

Nicely held in place with string - But nice and snug...

And finally the other end of the pond, there is not much on this pond as you can see in the current set-up... but seems to work well

I do wonder though, whether these single cartridges are as good as the multi cartridges, something I will look into once the new pond is up and running possibly

They are really not up to much to be honest. You need to run water through at a much slower rate than advertised to stop chlorine passing. It’s a good idea to get some DPD4 tablets so you can check the output to make sure.
The smaller 10” 3 pod units suffer from the same problem. It’s worth looking at the bigger 20`” pods or the short fat chunky versions if you come to replace what you have.

    Looking good

Didn't realise you could run UVCs vertically like that but I suppose as long as you are pumping through them it doesn't matter which way you mount them, does it?

I understand your reply on my thread now lol

Thank you Feline , I guessed as much, at the time it was a great purchase as I went for the gallonage and for that it seemed hard to beat, I will certainly be looking to change to something else once the build is complete and up and running...

Thankfully the water in my area is pretty good, and chlorine always registers zero on tests after the filter <touch wood - it stays like it for another couple of months at least>

Cheers Fred, certainly will mate - The pool is up and filling with just a few inches to keep it down if it gets windy again... now muddling through how the hell to plumb it in, I am nearly there but it is going to be an odd set-up for a few weeks, I think it will be pumped from both sides of the filter which could be problems waiting to happen

Well, to be honest neither did I, that was the only way it would fit in the bloody cupboard in the hedge, still, it works great

So Did I when I first did it, fed up with it now and hate it being all in the ground... so the new one is going to be a big sad oblong

    Good
It's basically sealed so in theory it shouldn't make any difference which way up you fit them?

I like your hose tail connection lol top quality cobbling there lol

Oblong is easier to build I would have thought and probably easier to make strong enough compared to an irregular curved shape?
