    Hi all,

Time for a quick update. I feel like it's small steps on limited time at the moment. This easter weekend gave me a good couple of days to get my fiberglass done. It wasn't a job I was looking forward to but I actually really enjoyed the process.
Also I found out I can't smell the styrene vapours. I wore an organic vapour mask as I knew I wouldn't be able to tell when it was getting too strong. I did have to take this off quite often though as they tend to condensate and start dripping which is no good.

Anyways all seemed to go ok. I found the flowcoat hard work. It was like treacle consistency and brush on only (from ECF) The flowcoat I've seen other people use is a lot runnier. Maybe it was the temperature on the day, 10 degrees which was on the limit of the flowcoat.

My pond worked out to about 29.5 square meters. I bought a 30sqm kit.
I underestimated how much talc I would need to dot and dab the foam boards and finish around returns etc. I ordered 5kg which I thought would be a lot of talc but it really wasn't. Also the kit didn't seem to come with enough tissue oddly. So I have tissued walls but no tissue on the floor. The flow coat just about went far enough. I was starting to worry a bit. I had about 1 litre left when finished.

    Anyways here's some pics

    20210406_152158.jpgtumblr_ce85dde56239ae472f515f3ffa3f9906_ccd9da8f_2048.jpgtumblr_1dbdde718fbc56d291cef18b5a1e848f_2d5264dd_2048.jpg

Next bit is to put a small base in for my drum and bio and start connecting up pipe work.

Glass is on order. I think the most nerve wracking bit about all of this is hoping and praying there will be no leaks.

    Agreed looks great !!

I enjoyed the process doing myself too, I did a kit but ended up getting a couple of barrels of additional resin from a local supplier, I mixed mine up to dry quick due to temperatures dropping before winter so it was all hard work as it was going off damn quick, certainly made me sweat, as for the semll, it still lingers in my tool shed

I hope you don't have any issues with your fibreglassing. I heard about a few people who had issues with the east coast fibreglass pond kits.

I had issues with pin holes - which I put down to my own inexperience of fg.

But I understand they weren't adding enough wax to their top coat which was causing issues with the top coat curing. I certainly had issues and I was adding enough catalyst and thoroughly mixing it up in the bucket that it was going off in the bucket before I could get it all on. I had to apply a second coat in the end.

    Hi Twhitenosugar,

Yeah the flowcoat was my biggest worry as I knew I had to work fast with it. I mixed the flowcoat with a paddle mixer for a good 5 - 10 minutes. Then decanted into 5l buckets. I added 2% catalyst to each bucket as I used it and mixed it in really well, more so than the resin. I probably only spent 10 minutes at the most with each bucket. The flowcoat seemed to cure ok. I would say it cured with no tack in about 45mins to 1 hour. I did get a few sections which I had to brush over again while they were still wet. It was almost as if the flowcoat seemed to draw away or fish eye for want of a better word in areas which I think I went over too lightly.

I flowcoated in 10 degrees C. I didn't get any buckets curing before I got it on the wall. I'm not sure I would want to try it in 20c though.

Sounds like it went much more smoothly (excuse the pun) for you then it went for me.

As long as the fibreglass was well wetted out I'm sure you'll be fine.

Good luck with it. It is exciting to see it progress, especially now you are so close to getting it water tight.

    Hi all,

Managed to get a bit more progress over the last couple of bank holidays.

Almost made an epic mistake by gluing the 4" pipe flange from the BD in place without the threaded collar. I realised just in time and managed to pull the flange back off before it set up. I stuck the collar on, a load more solvent and stuck the flange back on again. Phew.

I've tried to tuck all my pipework back on the wall. Made for some interesting problem solving.

It seems to be holding water so far.

Yes that does look nice and tidy, albeit all upside-down confused me

How are you enclosing your kit are you adding a lean-too type thing or block built ??

There is new jump guard I believe for upside down ponds that stops the water falling out too

Ken, thanks very much for the comment. Glad to hear I didn't make it look like a dogs dinner.
Also sorry for the Australian pics. Not sure what happened. I'm on tapatalk now so should be easier.
Yesterday was an exciting day. Four fish went in. Pics below.
The only issue I did cause myself is that my 4" ball valve from the bd was hard to move. So I took the union off and loosened the adjustable cup off slightly using the handle. On assembling I can't get the union to seal properly again. I've replaced the o ring. Used silicone grease. Its been apart 4 times and I still get a drip from the union every 20mins or so. I actually wonder if its leaking up between the valve body and the adjustable ball seal.

Actually I'm confused if the larger fish are Taisho Sanke or Doitsu. There was a lot going on yesterday.
