I'll be back.......lol
That's a great idea about testing a bucket of pond water I will try that tomorrow.
I'm going with the conservative approach and get them out if the water. I'm holding off for a few days to check and double check that after this big upset for the fish they don't have to go through it again due to my lack of planning.

The only thing it won't prove is the presence of other toxic substances which may require further investigation ?

Why didn't I think of this. I asked my wife's nephew if he could come over with a few friends to get started on the pillar extensions. He looked at the job in hand and I could see him thinking. He then piped up "uncle Neil" can we do it this way and I'm like WTF didn't I think of that.........
Anyway he's busy pouring concrete right now, Monday I will waterproof them then on Tuesday we will get the extensions installed along with the RDF

Lol I bet at first you thought what's this muppet going on about lol
You often find you can over think certain jobs or problems so sometimes it's better to step back have a break and have a fresh look or get someone else to have a look as you can get bogged down with a particular way of wanting to do something and miss the obvious easier option.
BTW when I say 'you' it's just used as a generalised term, 'we, us or I' fits but 'you' seems to fit better grammatically if that makes sense?
I've had the same thing happen many times and it seems the least likely person has spotted something that makes things better, easier or quicker etc.

I think your nephew's idea was inspired by this -

Depending on how old he is he'd either just finished playing with some or has a good memory lol

Neil..
I wouldn’t do it if I was you... the lime from the cement either by accident or leaching from the finished uncured surface will raise the PH of the pond and dependent on the amounts is likely to kill your fish and any plants you have in there... it’s the age old question of do you want to take the risk.... if you value your pond which looks nice I would get them out into a holding tank and complete the job in an isolated environment.. some people say you can neutralise like by Peforming a vinegar wash after you’ve completed the work... remember changing the PH of a pond dramatically can do more harm than good also...
