I'm 75% through a new pond build and intended to be running the skimmer and filter with just one pump.
Intend to have several adjustable valves to control flows.
Pond is 2500 gallons approx .

I’ve tried this on an old pond going into a nexus but separated them in the end.
its very difficult to know how much the bottom drain is pulling, the skimmer was a little easier as you could see the surface draw.
i would get a build up of muc on the bottom.
i used the nexus through bead filter and uv.
i later separated the skimmer to uv on one line and nexus through bead on the other.
This set up ran for many years and worked very well.

Stretch the budget to 2 identical pumps.
Then if the crucial one on the nexus fails it's a straight swap with no plumbing alterations while you arrange repair or replacement.

I think you will find it depends on the diameter of the pipe, i run two identical pumps from one drum. This has two 4in BDs and the skimmer attached, have just changed the skimmer from 1.5 to 2.00 inch this has improved the flow but it still gets stronger when the water level in the pond drops , hope this helps.

Running heater at low temp?
Covering the pond with polycarb should be enough to stop water temps dipping below 6C for the most...
