Jason’s New pond build
Hi, I’m a new member to the forum and have just started digging for my new pond.
And need some advice on strength of retaining wall and walls of the pond.
I’m building a retaining wall to hold back the garden that will be about 4-5 ft the pond will be incorporated into the retaining wall,
I’m using 7N blocks for the wall and pond.
I’ve seen most people just laying them down on their belly’s, that’s how I was going to do it, but now I’ve had a suggestion from another builder to use the blocks to build a cavity wall with two inch cavity that we will Fill with concrete and rebar.
Any advise will be appreciated.

It’s the pipe to the soak away, that’s what has determined my depth of the pond.
Getting through the chalk has been so hard anyway I’m quite glade I can’t go any deeper.

Any thoughts on viewing window on the short width, it will measure approximately 2.3m on the outside, I want to fit an infinity window.
Anyone have any ideas on a safe size of the window without risking the strength of the walls?

Re the blocks 'on the belly' for me, easily strong enough and already over engineered, then some, rebar is expensive and you dont need it with 7N blocks laid in that way especially with your pool dimensions.

[QUOTE=JJLondon;342642]Thanks bob, do you think that 7N blocks on their belly are adequate for the retaining wall too? It will be about 5ft, retaining 4 1/2 ft lawn and my pond walls will tie into it.
Thanks Jason
I built a retaining wall in my garden had a couple of friendly brickies help me as I work in construction.
What I was advised to do was lay several length on then the next at 90 degrees to form a support/buttress on the garden side. then each layer tie this in
placed membrane on back of blockwork and backfilled to this with gravel to allow water from garden/lawn to run along wall to points where it could drain out
as I was told issue wasnt the ground but more the weight of water in the ground pushing against wall
used brick to front of this block wall to make it look nice
Hope this helps

I would redirect the soak away pipe around the pond if it was me, I would build over it when it’s easy to move.
