Steve's koi new pond build.
20200713_120710[1].jpg20200711_211110[1].jpg20200711_211056[1].jpgHello all, It's time to start to build my new pond, just waiting for a few more bits to turn up and the build will be on It's way.
New home for now and the old pond.
The swimming pool is up to temporarily house the fish, and I've just put the air stone in to aerate the water.
Need to learn how to get the pics the right way up and we can start again lol.

Good luck with the build. Are you going bigger or just renewing the old one?

Temp pond all up and running, I'm putting 75ml of Bacto plus in every day to help the water and filter, and atm in doing a 50% water change daily to keep the toxins down until the filter builds up.
Last pic of pool covered up for the night due to the cats next door.
Going to start ripping the old pond out within the next day or 2.
Question............how much food should I be feeding while the filter builds up, I'm only feeding minimal atm every other day, but was thinking to stop feeding for a week or 2.

just a quick update peeps. Old pond is down and I've got the ply to shutter a concrete collar round the pond so the new sleepers don't sit on dirt. Fish are OK as well.20200807_191729.jpg

It's not going to fast, but were getting there. Shuttering for the concrete collar around the pond and filter house is almost finished.
Just waiting on the reinforcing for the concrete and I'll be doing that next.
Question......Can I run my returns in the concrete collar as I don't want to see any pipework ?.
Thanks for looking in.Last edited by Steve's koi; 21-08-2020 at 09:58 AM.

I don’t think I would install them this way as I reckon it would weaken the collar. If the collar would fail I would bet it would fail where you returns are placed if you done it this way. I’m no expert though but that would concern me if it was my pond. How high above the collar will the water level be? As the higher you go will be more pressure on that collar. If you don’t go hi above ground you may get away with it. But if you going couple foot above ground with that pressure I wouldn’t chance doing it they way you considering. All the best

i have never heard of pond returns coming out of a coller or pond base before. only out of wall structure or above pond. like waterfalls and mid and bottom returns. water shoots.
i tend to agree with chaz. maybe t would be a weak point. i have mid returns that you don t see pipe work that go under ground into the wall 2 foot of the bottom. the only time the pipe work is above ground
is in my filter house. my in wall skimmer you can see that pipe work. on the outer of the pond.
maybe some one in construction industry can answer the question for you.

Hi Charco and Fred.
From top of collar the new sleepers will raise the pond by 18". The collar it's self will be 8" w & 12" H, with 12mm reinforcing rods right round the collar. The deepest part of the pond is 4' 6" to top of collar, so will be 6ft to top of sleepers, which is half the pond, the other half of the pond will be 4ft deep inc sleepers. Total size of pond is 20ft x 10ft.
The thing is I didn't want any pipework showing on the outside of the pond, I think it spoils the look. Maybe I should bury the pipes 1st before I concrete the collar. I don't know, I'm going round in circles at the moment .

My pipe work was all buried and glued first
Under ground. Then built around and a over them. Here is a photo of of bottom drain and 2x returns
And filter house being built around them.
So all placed under ground first. Same with sewer waste to drains.

Cheers for that Fred. I think I'll bury the returns under the collar 1st mate. O well, shuttering out and more digging .

The Daily pond temp thread
Just kept 12 overnight for the first time. Hitting 12.8 in the daytime but bang on 12 first thing...
