Topcoat/Gelcoat pealing off
Hi guys,
I've been finding bits of Gelcoat (old hard) in my filters over the past few weeks, so quite large chunks. No fibreglass, just Gelcoat.
I assumed it was just stuff that I'd painted into the bottom drains coming off, but today I've been down to reattach my BD diffusers as they both floated off, and to my horror have seen 4 large(2'*2') patches of Gelcoat peeling off the wall.
There is a very clean new layer of perfect Gelcoat underneath by the look of it, which means it's the 2nd coat I put on over the initial coat that got sanded down due to lots of sharps.
Does anyone know why this is happening? It only seems to be at the bottom of one wall, and has peeled like a flower opening, and can easily be peeled off by hand.
Cheers,
Jay

Hi Guys,
I fibreglassed, then sanded, then put on a green Gelcoat, but this had lots of sharps in it, so I sanded them back, but there were so many that the finish looked awful, so I went over it again.
I can't remember how much I redid, certainly the whole of the back wall which is peeling.
So what is happening? I'm assuming I've done something wrong.
Cheers,
Jason

Hi Ken,
Thanks for the reply. I had so many problems with the topcoat going off crazy quick that the whole wall had sharps, so it pretty much all got sanded. Stupidly I thought it looked unsightly with all the sanding marks, which is why I topcoated it again. I did wipe it all down with acetone after I sanded it, which dulled the marks left by sanding, but it still looked bad enough to redo it.
So you think it will all come off then? I don't even understand how it blows, surely the pressure of the water would keep it pressed against the wall, and I would have thought it would come away, but not split open and peel back. It's crazy.
I hated doing it, but stupidly thought it looked easy. Lol
Jay.

Hi Ken,
Thanks for the reply. As it's just the 2nd coat, and not the one on the fibreglass, I'm not going to lose any sleep over it, it's annoying rather than anything.
Cheers,
Jay
