Has the window arrived yet Rob?

    Hey,

Nope. Window not arrived yet annoyingly. Busied myself with the building of the filter area slab instead. This will have a retaining wall going in the back, parallel with the pond and then will be decking over the top eventually, and then built into a cupboard as well. Where the dirt is on the left of the slab, there will be stairs leading upto the deck eventually.

After looking at the crazy price of stainless steel ones, I've decided I'm going to make my own fibreglass waterfall. I Just brought a 1.5m long concrete lintel and plan to have the decking span over the back face of the pond, about 1 concrete block high above the pond level. Waterfall will run under the decking and exit over the backwall of the pond. May also put lighting behind the waterfall hidden under the decking... and a service hatch in the deck.

My plan is to fibreglass up a tray made of an MDF mould lined with polypropylene (resin won't stick to it.. I've loads of PP left over at school from our race car build). Now I know I can DIY fibregalss and keep it waterproof on a pond scale, this waterfall seems like a doddle.) I'll build it so water from the filter flows into a box shaped 'sump/baffle' at the back end of the fall, and then bubble over a long flat section then off the lip. This will then all be set this into some blockwork on the backwall, which will also support the decking where the dirt pile is at present. I may also put some media in the baffle of the waterfall to act like a kind of crude shower setup? thoughts on that? worth it?

Anyway... long way to go, and I keep coming up with things I want to add, the further I get through it!

Also... anyone know if it's possible/easy to transplant Acers?

The tall green one in the back of the last photo is about 10ft high and gorgeous (although needs a pruning) I'd like to put it nearer the new pond if possible, and it also makes the area for my new workshop bigger as well if I can move it) - My wife has put me under orders that it has to be kept...

Am I likely to kill it if I try to move it?

I moved a beautiful acer a number of years ago, it had so many tiny roots which I damaged and it didn’t survive. I also did not move it in the Autumn which is the ideal time as they are not actively growing. I think if you decide to move you would have to dig around and move with the soil so the roots are not damaged. They do it at Chelsea so it can be done but I wouldn’t do it and would opt to buy a new one as I would never hear the end of it from the wife......she still goes on about it now and is currently as I mentioned you were thinking about doing it.

Looking good. How come you’ve used soil waste pipe instead of pressure pipe on the drains? I didn’t think you could solvent weld soil pipe?

Soil pipes fine.. It it's literally sold as solvent weld soil pipe! Anyway, it's not leaked yet. And the reason. Price. £8.00 for 3m of this from selco vs about 50 quid or more for the pressure pipe by the time its delivered... And it's not just the pipe. Mention pressure pipe and the fittings costs go through the roof as well. It's all. Pvc. And if it can handle buildings and foundations being poured and built over it I'm sure it can handle the pond.... (hope I don't eat my words now lol)

    Ok,

Still no window - Coming Tuesday apparently! Got on with the cladding. This stuff wasn't cheap but I'm really happy with it. Going to do Porcelain tiles as per the sample for the topper.

Also shown below is the eventual 'vision' now we've settled on it! This has evolved soo much, but I'm really excited to see it now. Some waterboatmen and a dragonfly have already colonised the water up to the window height, so that's a good sign I guess!

I'll update once the window's in! Soon.... soon!

Hi Rob, first time I have been on in ages and came straight here hoping to see the end result with the pond up and running as I guess you want everything finished before starting back to work. How is it going then? Is the window all sorted now, I hope so as I read what you posted on 12th July expecting it to be delivered in a few days. Looking forward to seeing the end result as I am sure you are.

Wow, ok. Here goes, strap in!

(TLDR - theres a link to video of it at bottom and some pics below)

For those who want to know, read on:

Haven't posted since before the window as I've literally spent every day (bar a week away in Devon) working on the pond and deck area. It's 95% finished now, just some cladding to go on the back wall under the tree, wooden cupboard to build over the filters, Acer to plant in the DIY planter, and then build steps up the side of the filters where the dirt is at moment... Then I can finally demolish the old pond and start doing the ground work for my uber shed! (what a run around!)

Before I start, I'd like to say a massive thanks to Ken Alexander for his advice on fibreglassing, My mate Paulo for helping with the glassing, Gaz on here (who's local to me and offered to meet up and share his knowledge, and everyone else on the forum who's offered advice on my various threads!.

I'm over the moon with how it's turned out, spec below, then time for some pics:

    • Size: 3x3x1.2m Deep (external) - approx 7000l with filters.
    • Filtration - DIY 3 120l barrel system - K1 media in each, 3rd barrel aerated. as per wrighty on Youtube - Super impressed with how well this works!
    • 110mm bottom drain feeding barrels, with 10,000lph vari pump pulling through this (at 50% power)
    • 2nd 10,000lph pump pulling through skimmer, feeding UV and Waterfall (UV on a bypass circuit with option to send feed to barrels if needed) (also running at 50%)
    • Single 40mm return opposite skimmer.
    • Waterfall bodge filter (the water filters up through a sump in the waterfall, filled with gravel and filter wool.. catches a lot of fine stuff actually)
    • DIY Waterfall (fibreglassed myself after making up a mould)
    • LED lighting under waterfall to backlight at night
    • Window: 1800x600 (visible is 1650x530)
    • Concrete block on side construction, on 150mm reinforced slab. Covered in stone cladding.
    • Copings are Porcelain floor tiles (buggers to cut these!)
    • Fibreglassed over 25mm rigid insulation (did this myself with Ken's advice)
    • Electrics - Running a 3 gang 'smart' socket outlet linked to my google home - with Air, wateffall pump and lights on the smart plug. I've set up a google routine so if I say "Hey google, feed the fish" it turns off the air and waterfall for 5 mins so the water is calmer while I feed them.... as soon as it switches off they go crazy, they've learned! Also have a routine to turn the waterfall light on at dusk, and turn off at midnight automatically and self adjusts for time of year (will also hook deck lights up to this as well)
    • There will be a pond cover (not yet made) but it will sit flush with coping, on these brackets I set under the coping. I just screwed fixing strips underneath, then designed and 3D printed some plastic angle covers to support. This is mainly to prevent my kids falling in.. see last 2 pics Yeah. I know!
    • Fish - 5 koi, 2 mirror (from old pond - nothing special, just garden centre ones - but we've never seen them much in the old pond being green) - There were also 24 babies found in the old pond (Think they're hybrids, or mirror carp) - we've re-homed 15 of these and plan to lose a few more as they get bigger - dont want to have more than 10 fish in here at full size)
    • Vitals - Water has tested fine everyday for 3 weeks now. Water has cleared up massivley (had a green bloom at the start)
    • Body weight - Went from 13 stone, to 12 stone, grew a beard and long hair and have a tan like a Greek waiter now.. Just in time to start back at school....
    • Total cost (including deck and all materials, skips, concrete, cladding etc etc ) - approx 5.5k - Glad my labour's free!
    • I did EVERYTHING myself! I'm damn proud of it.

Anyway Before and after, then some progress pics... video link at bottom Any questions, shout, happy to explain what/how/why I did things!

    Hi Rob,
I apologise if I caused you a headache getting a very informative write up including photos and a video on the same day but you are all up to date now and everyone can see what a superb job you have done. It looks great and you should be really chuffed with yourself to have done everything and to such a high standard. I was expecting to see a photo with a couple of young uns who had gotten to close to the edge. You can now enjoy the fruits of your labour and sit in a whole host of many different locations and enjoy the fish who must feel like royalty. They look friendly on the video so get hand feeding them some watermelon, your kids will love doing that and the fish will enjoy the treat. You just need to get your garden furniture on the deck with an outside heater and you will be set whatever the temperature to be outside. The window looks brilliant and you have a very good view of it from your patio doors. The fish seem to love swimming in front of it and will always be there to greet you once they feel the vibrations that your outside. Thanks for taking the time to inform us every step of the way, it is great to see the start to finish with everything in between and some very happy fish swimming around. Love the google set up, can you train it to clean the pond also?

Thanks. Amazingly my kids haven't fallen in yet. The 6 year old can swim, so not worried about him. The 4 year old can half swim.. It's the 1 year old who's just started walking I'm worried about. Shame I've got to ruin the aesthetic with a cover but needs must. The kids love it already, the middle one badgers me about 5 times a day saying "daddy, the fish are looking hungry, they haven't had their breakfast/brunch, lunch,/dinner/snack yet" lol.

The worst thing is daily cleaning all their grubby finger prints off the window glass.. I though it'd be the inside of the glass I'd be cleaning all the time.. Nope!

Got patio furniture on order for the top. Looking forward to enjoying it rather than throwing money and time at it now, but it's been fun in a sadistic kind of way building it
