    Steve's pond MK2

After a lot of blood and sweat digging and building the last pond which took around 2 years from start to finish, the Mrs decided she wanted to sell up and move. The fish went in in May and the house went on the market in September. I was gutted however we have moved and nows time to build a new pond. This one will be slightly wider and longer but not as deep, im aiming for around 18 foot in length and just over 6 foot in width maybe more if I can swing it without her noticing. The last pond was 6 foot deep but I'm only going 5 foot this time as taking the advice I was given last time after id dug it to depth. The new pond will have 2 windows on the side facing the house and will be a foot away from the fence. Those who followed my last build know I went right up to the fence last time which resulted in the fence falling in the hole and was a right pain to install the return pipework. The last pond was dug with a shovel I vowed never again would I dig a pond by hand so will be hiring a digger and a tipper this time. This will be quicker and I also have to think of the livestock I have which need their new home. Ive ordered the additional window, both bottom drains and the skimmer. Im waiting for the builder to give me their quote then hopefully I'll be on my way. Filtration will be the same as last time BD'S to sieve, to bead, to UV then to 2 possibly 3 returns. Skimmer to shower back into the pond. For now here's a couple of pictures of my temporary holding pool which is going a nice shade of green and the location of the new pond. Pond will be 3 fence panels starting at the end of the patio up to the glass, I'm them planning to enclose the patio area once the digger has finished to house the filter house and indoor storage. Think that's it for now until I can get started.

As I had a bit of spare time tonight I decided to mark out the outside of the pond. External dimensions 8 foot by 18 foot 2 foot under ground 3 foot above. Just need my quote now. Can just about see it marked out with white string on the bottom right of the picture

nice size and decent sized garden mate, if i did mine again i would not be so rectangular, it would be more rounded at the corners or at least two of them to aid flow and to stop waste and debris from getting caught up in the corners, its not a major issue as the fish will normally move things about with their fins but just my pennies worth, look forward to watching your build mate.....cheers Steve.

I'm just wondering, i've ordered 1 skimmer for the pond which was enough on the last pond but should I have 2 ie one at each end if the pond and would they run ok if i connected them together to pump into my shower? I've also got to think about access too as I'll only have a foot between the pond and the fence, the filter house will back directly onto the end of the pond.

When I planned mine, to calculate the number of blocks, i did it long hand.

I worked out length and width of the hole to dig by working out how many whole blocks (thought I might as well make things easy for myself) I'd need for one course. Obviously you'll need to know what type of block you'll use so you have their dimensions to go by.

I then added on about 1cm for each mortar line and added on 10cm extra each end so the blocks could be laid without touching the sides of the hole.

I then quickly drew out each wall on a scrap of paper (accounting for the brick bond lay out I.e every other course will be one less block) and went up as many courses as I needed for the desired depth. Then just added them up. Not forgetting to deduct the ones where a window will go.

This worked out surprisingly well as I ordered enough so I'd have 4 spare in case of damage or if you have to cut one down for skimmers and pond returns and ended up with only 2 spare.

How's that for a bit of Vorsch Sprung Derch Teknik.

Mind you, there's probably a much easier way of doing it lol.

For sand and cement i guessed that and ran put of sand half way through so ordered more and then ended up with a load left over lol. I'm sure there are calculators online for that sort of thing, although how much you need will depend to some degree on your mixing ratios.

Thanks will have a think about that option. Ive already gone bigger than the last pond which hasn't gone down well but I'll take the moans for now. I'm getting a builder to build this one as I want it constructed as quickly as possible so I can get the fish out of the temporary pond and into the new one. Just waiting on a few quotes to come back and to see when i can get hold of a digger and tipper lorry.

New toys turned up this week, have been so busy only just got around to unpacking them. Should find out Saturday when i can get a digger to come and start digging the pond. Had a quote to build the pond which came in at £2800 thats just for labour that seemed quite excessive to me, I worked out I need around 280 blocks laid so thats £10 per block. Any ideas what I should expect to pay?

If it's just the block work, just pay a bricky. It should take 2 days max to lay those. I've got someone doing mine over a weekend and I'm paying him £300 to give you an idea, I don't know him so it's not mate rates.

Cheers i did think it was quite steep to lay the blocks. I'll put an advert out see if i can get hold of a brickie. Hoping to have the hole dug soon and then can get the base done. Trying to get hold of blocks at the moment seems to be proving difficult alot of places seem to be collection only

Have you tried Huws Gray? https://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rc...CdhppAB0eZMXIc

if you do online quote facility they get back quickly with price and delivery date, mine were delivered within 3 days. Quote was substantially better than the other merchants too. Ie 35 quid for a bulk building sand, other merchants are asking 60 odd at the moment.

I think Travis Perkins does free delivery on orders over £50. But they are normally fairly pricey compared to other places.

I got 2x 3.6 by 2m for £40 at selco, it's free delivery over £50 spent. So you could get 5 at that size for the price of 1 what your after. But don't know if that's any good to you.
