    Purging pond?

    Hi all

Just going through process and planning a new filter set up. Plans are as follows
Spindrifter 4" and a 3" skimmer to drum filter unit and separate bio drum..(going to try get an amalgam installed, does amalgam go in bio unit or drum? Then there will be a 2" return to pond, split into 2x2 underwater tangible returns, only 2 on at a time for clockwise circulation and other 2 for anticlockwise circulation, ball valves fitted to these. The bakki shower will be 2" return.

I have heard a lot about purging a bottom drain. How is this done? Do I need to add something? Pics would prob help.

Apologies if you think it is a dumb question but I don't get the principle of it?

    Cheers

Hi mate. I have 2x pond returns going clock wise and anti clockwise. One has to be isolated. If say going clockwise. The anti clockwise has to be isolate.
Which can cause dead spots and build up of bad bacteria. If forgotten about. I run each way at least once a week. To stop this

Also you need to purge the bottom drain at least once a week. So you need ball valves
Or slide valves in certain places to do this.

The idea is to empty so much back to the pond. Or down the drain.Out of say your bio tank. So you isolate the bottom drain. Behind the bio tank. Then say half the bio tank is empty.
Then you start the drum up. And open the valve behind the drum and bio tank.
And it rushes in real fast by gravity. And that cleans all the crap out the drain.
Needs to be done at least once a week

Many thanks freddyboy for explanation, so basically it is like when I have cleaned my nexus 300 and then refill it this is like purging the drain? Always do 2 flushes on the nexus.
with the new system I could basically T the 4" drain line and add valves with one going to the drum and one straight to drain,

The underwater tangible returns I have all have ball valves on, I have two at one end of pond and two at opposite end, for clockwise I open left on one end and right on opposite end . Then close these and open right on one end and left on opposite end to create anti clockwise, I think this is right lol

Many thanks for clearing it up
