    Air line through bottom drain?

pond 1.jpgHi, I've brought one of these bottom drains which has an air ring around the top

    https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/312378496658

(I know there are more expensive options but this is what I've gone with and I've already solvent welded the pipework together) it comes with a bundle of 8mm tubing to run to the ring and is just a push fit onto a connector on the air ring which sits on top. Can I run the air line tube through the bottom drain for a clean, agro free install? (I appreciate it would come up into the filter, but I'm doing a DIY filter.. 3 x blue barrel type job as per 'Terry Wright' on YouTube) so figured I could tap into the air on that Or would you run it through some pvc conduit in the trench parallel, or I have some 15mm push fit water hose lying around as well, which might be better than conduit as it would have a gentle curve rather than sharp 90 if I ever have to replace the air hose (feeding through). With the later 2 solutions I'm worried about where it comes up through the slab being a water leak point (it'll be a 150mm slab)and I know I'd have to have the outlet of the air hose higher than the pond water level or it would drain out obviously... Thoughts? Or should I put it in conduit but put the conduit within the bottom drain pipe?... Or just lie it on the finish pond floor and be done? (messy)

    Sorry. New to this!

Messy for me. You will need a way to isolate the filter system so going through the bottom drain isn’t really an option. I wouldnt really want another tube in there either....looking good though

Ahh yeah. Good point. I've brought a gate valve for the drain already.. Forgot you'd have to shut it at some point! Lol.. Yeah works great until cut the hose in half when cleaning the filter. You said messy?
Why not seperate conduit then? Leak point issues?

Hang on though... Could I not go through the bottom drain pipe before the gate valve with one of these (then some big washers and rubber tap washers between the brass nuts) to seal against the pipework? Or an off the shelf connector if such a thing exists? (not sure what to search)

It’s all a bit Heath Robinson. Personally I wouldn’t have anything inside that pipe except smooth pipe! I asked the question re the Spindrifter drains on here recently and that comes with a proper kit exiting through the extra pipe from the bottom drain.

Ok. Well, I diddnt put it through the pipe. I put it through some 15mm push fit hose, embedded in the drain trench and fastened to the mesh... Here's hoping it works! Too late now! Worst case I guess it can always be capped off and glassed over if it is a leak source and then I'm back to a 'messy' lay on the pond floor solution.

No doubt someone will be along to tell me I've screwed up! But, this is my first time through - Hope i'm doing it proper. If not, this post will serve as a warning to others! (I'll get this into a build thread soon.. concrete for base is coming Wednesday)

Not coming out now . Only concern would be stagnant water in the pipe, can you seal between the airline and outer pipe anyhow? Are you using rebar over the entire base?

Yeah I'll prop. Bung it with a silicone sealant plug or 3d print something. And yeah, mesh in the whole slab. Those bits were just the off cuts, so I thought might as well stick them in the trench part to give that some extra. Not bothering with hardcore as the ground is rock solid, but am doing a membrane as I had a load left over. Can't hurt and although I'm above the water table (I think.... Been so bloody dry) didn't want to tempt fate.

Have you tested your bottom drain for leaks. Bung in bottom drain and fill with water. To test it is not leaking. Before the base floor goes in.
Some one last week did nt test on his build last week.
Had new base in. And had to dig it back out for repair job. With new base floor in.
    Nightmare.

Oh don't worry. Done that already! Had it sat overnight with no leaks before doing the trench pour and it's also full of water in the pics. Just can't tell as it's so clear. I was paranoid about that to say the least!

I know you've done it know, but I have recently seen a bottom drain with an airline inside running with no issues. Just literally shoved through the 4" pipe via a t piece in the bottom drain pipe, in between the pond and the filter shed. Here's a video of it. Go to 1min 45s

Nice one mate. Not worried mate. It's not my pond. Just trying to help.
You would be amazed how many people get a leak on the BD. Good on you for thinking ahead. Enjoy the build bud
