Just wanted to share some pictures of my pond build

Please have a look at the pictures and feel free to offer advice and suggestions. This is my first proper pond and I am hoping to go for a natural looking "wild" pond with about 5 Koi. I think it will be about 10k litres Just wanted to share some pictures of my pond build
I will definitely be asking all the same questions as other first timers. Am particularly worried about installing the bottom drain and skimmer Just wanted to share some pictures of my pond build

Thanks everyone, a bit more digging today but making good pregress. First question: has anybody managed to find a cheap way of getting rid of soil or is it just a matter of hiring a massive skip?
    Cheers

I found it cheaper with a 16 ton grab truck. 3 or 4 grab trucks. Then hiring skips. Others to make it cheaper.
Bag it and take it to the tip yard.

Thanks, good idea. Did you list it as topsoil? Most of my soils is good but there is a fair amount of flint in the subsoil.

Knowing my missus it was probably listed as “dirt” and let the potential buyers ask

Getting there now. Wanted to share a few pictures of progress this week. Very happy and no leaks!
I'll be building the waterfall tomorrow and then going for the full fill.
How long should I leave it before adding fish?
    Thanks,
    Tim

Agree some nice photos mate. Nice pond.
    Fish wise.
I would add 3 or 4 to start the nitrogen cycle. Testing the water with a test kit.
At least twice a week. For NPS. New pond syndrome.
Feed sparsely to start with. Then as your
Filters and pond mature. Then add a couple more.
It's all about controlling the water parameters. To many fish at the start and
It will be hard to control lol. Water changes and not over feeding is the name of the game lol.
Your a water keeper. Now. Not a fish keeper.
And patience. My pond took 18 months to mature. Put some filter start in as well
Enjoy the pond and fish mate

    Thanks for the advice Fred.
How do you know when the pond is mature? I am in no rush fill with fish straight away as hope to enjoy many years of watching them grow.
Any particular brand of filter start I should get?

When you test the water. For ammonia. nitrite. Ph. Nitrates and kh.
When it spikes that is it maturing. So say ammonia and nitrite read 0.2. Then stop feeding. Do say a 10% water change.
And over a few days test. What your doing is diluting it down to zero. Then you start feeding again. Ammonia nitrite are toxic.
They can kill your fish. But eventually once the pond is mature. And filters. You will find you will not need to keep doing this.
The stop feeding and water changes.
    Like my pond.
I don t even have to test it now.
But I do. Just to keep an eye on things.
All ponds are different as in setups.it can mature in six to eight months.
Mine took 18 months. You should always do a 10% water change on your pond for the whole of the ponds life.
I do trickle in and out. Equates to 10%.
    And I do 10% everyweek. So I change 20%
    Water a week
I add st every 3 days as a dechlorinator.
    Sodium thiosulphate

On the filter starts. EA pond bombs. Gels.

    Hope this helps
    I use api test kit

You need a few fish in there to make it work.
They produce the ammonia to start it all off lol.
Unless you went say fishless cycle.
    Or anoxic.
    It's all on here.
    Anoxic Filtration

    Fishless cycle
    Fishless cycling

That's different ways people mature there ponds.
Me I went the fish way.

    Thank you Fred,
That is so helpful. I didn't realise that I needed to change the water so regularly. Glad I'm not on a water meter!

Pond full just need to buy some fish. Hopefully achieved a natural looking Koi Pond which will improve with age. All working well apart from a broken quartz sleeve and weak skimmer flow. Otherwise, I am happy Just wanted to share some pictures of my pond buildJust wanted to share some pictures of my pond buildJust wanted to share some pictures of my pond build
