Correct construction for bottom drain in slab?

    Hi, See pictures.

I'm about to order bits and dig the bottom drain (my first time doing this).

I'm a bit confused about how the drain passes through the slab. I want to do a 6" slab (150mm) to save on concrete, but also to allow more depth without digging even deeper ( with reinforcing mesh obviously). My question is, am I aiming for A, B or C as per the picture below? I can't find a drain designed like A) - I guess because it would be a leak point through the slab.

The drains I can find are designed like B and C - I guess with B, it weakens the slab significantly (I've read similar) particularly if I've only got 1" of concrete above and below... so.

Am I doing it like 'C' with just a trench under the pipe and drain? and I assume extra rebar in here? Is there any issue with the slab being odd shaped like this? will it distribute the weight fine? I can't see why not?

If so... how big would you dig the trench? Does anyone have any pics of their part of the install - I'm struggling to find images of this part easily on a quick search.

Sorry for the million questions, but I've not done this before and don't want to be getting it wrong for obvious reasons

    Thanks all! Super helpful forum!

And also... is 4" pipe overkill for my pond. It will be between 6000 and 7000 litres.. should I be looking for a smaller diameter drain system? Think I'm going for a basic easy pod for the filter.

Ahh. Ok. Where did you source those? Was it a kit or just pipework you ordered to make up those drops? Also - Does this then mean it's ok to drop the pipe out of the slab. Would people still put extra concrete underneath/around the zone for the drain to make the area stronger? I don't know why this is giving me such a headache lol! Just feels like literally the most crucial part!

C all the way, if your slab is 6 " then you need 6" around the pipe and at least 4" under the bottom drain itself, on the top of the pipe you will have about 50mm at the very top of the pipe, this needs to have the mesh over it and preferably under the pipe as well

Provided you are on clay or a well compacted MOT stone then 6" will be plenty

ok, thanks.. Makes sense. I guess Buy the drain first, then dig trench accordingly.

Is there anything wrong with this one? is that a good price, or too cheap?

I'll buy that then I can get the trench dug and concrete in next week hopefully. I thin onces the concretes down pschologically, I'll feel better! - At the moment, I've just torn a bloody great hole in the garden with no real progress!

My question is why not fit a pipe only rising up from the concrete floor and create a cap like the concrete weight used to hold a garden parasol. I have a spare one in the garden and it is easy enough to put legs on it to create a gap. Could also put a hook on it if you felt it needs.

Depends on what pipe you are using, just a quick look but to me that looks like it is for underground waste pipe, are you using waste pipe or pressure pipe, also be careful with metric and imperial sizes

I'd imagined normal wast pipe so I can pick up fittings from. Builder merchants. I assume these will still fit with an easy pod style filter? Any benefit to the pressure pipe?

Sorry to jump in on this, I'll be building another pond shortly so need to make sure I do the pipework correctly. Last time I didn't trench out the pipework for the BD or put any concrete under the BD itself, think I sat it on a couple of bricks to make it level. I guess from reading this post I done that wrong so need to trench and cement under the BD. Does the concrete in the trench and below the BD need to be set before the slab is poured or at the same time the slab is poured?

Also.. Sorry. Should I pour the trench and slab in one hit. Or do you think I'm OK to do the trench first (I have a mixer) encase the pipe partially so it doesn't move while I'm faffing getting the slab down and floated?

    Hi Rob

Ive just been trying to think back to my own construction . Mine would have been option B on your drawing , but with an 8" slab .Slightly bigger pond , at 12000L . Used strengthening fibres in the concrete , and the pond was fibre glassed . I used the 4" black waste pipe , going into an eazypod . 5 years on , everything is fine .

For your pond , if your having a 6" slab , should be fine , but to be safe just dig out a few inches around the pipework to give extra thickness below the pipe . Use 4" pipe , don't go smaller , as this can lead to blockages ect . Pressure pipe will give you total peace of mind , just costs a bit more . I used black waste , as I`m fairly tight . I wouldn't go less than this , personally . Just think of the hassle , if it bursts once everythings up and running . Probably worth the extra spend !

Have a quick look at some of the construction threads , to get a feel of what others have done . Have fun
