Your not missing anything mate, me personally don't see the point in adding any fish now, I'd only gave to cover it in 6 weeks time. I'll just wait till spring.

My ponds not finished yet and may not be a a good few weeks yet, due to various reasons.

Mine is three meters from kitchen window & dining area's patio doors so even if snowed over I can watch the fish through the window from inside the house lol !

by running without fish you can add ammonia and reach high levels without risk to any fish yet getting the bacteria growing in the bio system. In my case I can do water changes from my heavily stocked (65 fish) 1000gallon pond into the 3200 gallon pond Thus the bigger pond will have the equivalent of about 20 fish waste without the risk of New Pond Syndrome spikes damaging the fish who are still safely in the smaller pond with a mature bio system Working as normal

Exactly Jay I will be using all the winter time to get the rest of the pipework and filter house just right & get the flow tweaked before worrying about having fish in there if I have to stop the pumps and alter the system in any way.
The fish I have will be ok where they are until I start to slowly introduce the bigger koi. All of the non Koi & smaller nisai will stay in the smaller pond next year.

It makes sense. Up until after weeks back I was planning on adding a couple, but now times ticking away, think it's best to wait.

Time spent getting things right now save loads of heartache and trouble when up & running.

I did the same when building the 1000gallon pond from having a smaller in ground 500 gallon pond . I took my time and whether it was down to Planning & a lot of luck But I had no issues in the past three years. That pond took about a year to do then upgraded with a drum filter & anoxic baskets.

oh I know don’t tempt me more than the dealers are already, but I have to think to myself is it fair to the fish in new surroundings this time of the year unless your heating the pond Which I am not (yet)

Running your system even without fish will help to stop the water in there just going stagnant, green and horrible.
But also it’s an opportunity to get the bio media matured before fish. If you’re not heating though there is not very much point trying to get your filters going this late on in the year (in the uk), because it’s very hard to get the bacteria to colonise the media for the first time in low temperatures.

Its actually much easier to mature some of your media indoors in aerated dustbins. See Fishless cycling
Your friends and family will think you’ve lost the plot if you do this, but it’s like a real live chemistry experiment only much more fun.

Well it’s full & the only known small leak is on the pump connector which I expect it to dry up as it’s really slight & only really happened when I first turned the pump on... Although I have a must larger issue with the skimmer not ingesting enough water to skim!!! (I know you guys warned me about how I was gonna set up) so can’t be bothered to drain & fix now so will take time to think how best to resolve.

Found my cat sat staring through the window memorized by the bubbles... Both my cat's ate all my goldfish & frogs in my nature pond so will get the netting installed before fish!
