    Plumbing

Hi, im in the process of building a pond opprox 4000 gal. This is my plan for plumbing. Im looking for any pointers to improve or remove parts that are not really needed. Plan not to scale as you can see I had a bit of time on my hands!

You don’t really need two bottom drains on a 4K gallon pond. If you do then I would think you’d need more than one pump to cope with the flow .
I personally wouldn’t split the returns, I’d have a pump on each return to manage the flow.

I have a Aqua Forte DM 20000 Vari Flow. That should do the job shouldnt it?

My pond is just under 3800 gallons and I have two 20,000 vario pumps, one on each return. So in answer to your question, No.

Stick to just one bottom drain, unless you’re going for nearly 5000 gallons. Save some money.

Thanks for the info. I will have to invest in another one.
The reason im using 2 bottom drains is that the pond will be approx 5m in length.

I would move your skimmer to the same wall as the filters/ returns otherwise your return will just push food straight into the skimmer. If you move it it gets to travel around the pond. You will also save money on pipe work and digging?
My skimmer is on the same wall as the returns, skimmer on the left side and the returns on the right side.

If it’s 5m long and nearly 4000 gallons then it must be quite narrow? If possible try and square it off a little.

If you only have one pump I would move the move the valve on the pump in-feed and put it on the bypass of the heater, that way you can bypass the none heated return in winter and still be able to remove the pump for maintenance as you still have a valve on the in-feed

But I would go for two pumps and split the outlet of the bio

This is what mine is like apart from I didn't bother with the Drum Drain

4600 Gallon Concrete Block and Fiberglass
2100 mm x 710 mm Infinity Window 32mm thick glass
2 x Aerated Bottom Drains and Skimmer
    Filtreau HiFlow 30 Drum Filter
    Bio Chamber - 140 litres K1
Bakki Shower - 30 KG Sakura Far Infrared Media
    2 x 18,000 lh pumps
Heated from house boiler through a heat exchanger
    Idealseal MS290

The hole is 5m long x 2.5m wide in the shape of an athletics running track.

I’d have 2 bottom drains on that deffo, at least.
1 in the middle won’t clear the ends.
You’ll need some puff to run 2 effectively though, 2x30k variables whacked up quite high.

If you are having it that length, then I agree you will need 2 bottom drains.

Hi Roy, I am just looking at a setup near exact to what you have just the one 1 x 4" BD. I am just wondering about the 3 returns. My new pond is a raised sleeper and 2.4m x 2.4m. To try and avoid dead spots, I was looking to put 3 returns running along 3 of the sides as per pic below. Was just wondering on that 2" return after the heat exchanger how you are managing trying to get the water to go evenly 3 ways. Are you just adjusting a valve on each one until they look about even? Are all 3 going back in on the same wall or are they distributed? Where mine would have 1 on each of 3 sides, im assuming the different length pipe runs from the bio to the return points may make it tricky to balance the return evenly between the 3?

    Cheers
    Rich

I have 3 returns on 3 separate walls, as for balancing, I basically opened up the valves more the further away the pipe run goes, to be honest I am not sure it makes much difference as long as the water looks to be moving, just my opinion

This was my first drawing of it, although I didn't go for 4 returns and I did it in 2" pipe
