I wish I’d listened and put in the extra one. My pond is more or less 4x4 (just under) and the corners don’t quite get the pull from the drain situated in the middle.
Other things I wish I’d done are slope the pond bottom toward the drain and chamfer the corners off.
Saved some money but have compromised the detail.

Pond size will be 4 x 2 m with a depth of up to 1.8m so I would have thought one drain right in the middle with the base sloping to the drain would be sufficient ? Id also have the corner built up slightly to stop crap getting stuck there. With an aerated bottom drain some say that this assists pulling all the debris to the drain but others say it does not make any difference .

Returns will look to put in two as Roy suggested above to allow the change of direction I also need to look at where to put the skimmer as there seems to be lots of different views (almost as many as which filter system to use) .

Will work on a basic drawing today of plans as drainage problem is just about sorted and will start putting the shape to the pond in the next couple of days.

To be honest I think the skimmer position is personal preference because we don't really know what the water will do in a specific pond, until its full of water

The reason I would say two bottom drains is that looking at my setup the bottom drains only seem to pull around 1 meter diameter around them on the base of the pond, you can easily see this with the blanket weed lol, a sloping floor would help, my corners are chamfered and I have aerated bottom drains but they are not on all the time, I think the aerated bottom drains help to keep the water moving but they also keep fines suspended in the water

Basic design of new pond. Bottom drain and pipes received direct from JBR Plastics . Excellent service thanks for recommendation above and Gazkoi.

Think I will stick with single bottom drain but will make sure decent slope towards drain on bottom of pond.

Hopefully can attach a plan now.

Well the pond rebuild has moved into a complete garden make over at the same time with fencing being replaced on 2/3rds of the garden , old bushes and trees being removed, flower beds being removed , lawns extended and replaced as well as new drainage and a complete new pond with new electrics being put in the whole of the garden.

Whilst I have the excavator in and man power around , might aswell go for it.

Photos to follow on next post - hopefully

Getting to the stage where pond shape is in the ground . Will be 3.5 x 2 x 1.5 ish. Will be looking to lay the base soon and bottom drain . Have seen lots if different videos on bottom drain fitting , is there one that really hits the nail on the head.
Next with base do people recommend goung for a delivered mix with fibre in or stick to the old school mesh allowing for side wall rods to be tied in . Will be building the side walls with hollow concrete bricks and filling.

Still have a slight problem with water appearing in bottom of one corner of the dig and deciding if we build another man hole to trap it and leave a sump pump in it attached to another drain just in case. With no rain for a couple of weeks it's hard to gauge how much will collect there.

Ok might be a silly question but what's to stop a fish swimming under and into your bottom drain. I know a big 24 inch on won't but if there are some small ones in there to start with ?? Gap looks pretty big.

Once it’s all in and the fibreglassed or liner is all done, set the plate so you have about 20mm if gap, you will need to cut and fix the pipe in position once your happy with the gap

Don’t bother with the fibres, they don’t add anything to the strength in the way a pond is constructed, just use the mesh, it’s tried and tested

Ok so after a bit of delay with having to divert some underground running water we are now moving onto the part of building the pond.
Hard-core placed in the deep part of the old pond and well crushed down and back filled then a later of type 1 laid down crushed in then a two inch layer of concrete spread over to hold it all in place.

Bricks laid out so as to get the exact position and size of the pond and the centre of the pond found.

Then bottom drain going into place, never done one before so was rather nervous however seemed to get it dead centre and level with a pit of tweaking.

Has been left overnight and looks good this morning, will leave it today before looking at setting the mesh out for the base and then getting ready to pour the base next weekend when we can get the next delivery in of sand !!

Fence posts and panels going in today instead of pond !

Internal size of the pond before render, possible insulation and fibre glassing is 1.82 by 3.64 m depth will be 7 or 8 blocks high so between 1.6 to 1.8 deep. Will decide when we start getting locks above ground level.

Picture of Acer in the garden above the pond. At least 75 years old .

Looking good mate don t forget to fill the drain and pipe with water to test it.
Before the base goes in. Nightmare if it leaks once concrete slab goes in.

Thanks Fred. Will do that today. Solvent weld that we used seemed to be very good and the build quality of the bottom drain looked very good aswell.

    Making good progress

As Fred says, test your bottom drain, I left mine full overnight and got up the next morning to find one almost empty, I had to get it replaced, it was only a small leak but if I hadn't of tested it I would be in deep Do do now

Love the Acer, do you know what type it is?

Drain filled and left for several days now and all fine.

Sorry don't know the name of the Acer - will ask the guy who cuts it back every three or four years next time he is in.
