Off to the shop again today. Picking up the kohaku that I brought a few weeks back, and also picking out something else. I’m thinking w hi utsuri, but whether that’s what I’ll come home with is another matter

Well, I ended up changing my mind on the hi utsuri, and went instead for a tancho showa, and picked up the kohaku I brought a few weeks back too. Apologies as usual for the terrible photography!
Also picked up a pan net, and a bowl so I can grab things out for a better look if needed.
I’m not confident it’ll work, but I’m hoping that the tancho spot will stay as it grows. I’m planning on feeding plenty of beni enhancing food, so if anyone has any suggestions for these in addition to oranges and shrimp then please let me know!

Both very nice mate and I think, from listening to people line Mike Snaden, the Kohaku will tighten up. Would love to see photos of them again in 6 months time.

Well, it was only ever a matter of time! I seem to have hit a second cycle, around about a week after adding the second pair of koi.
Just a small ammonia spike at the moment, so an EA pond bomb has been added and I’m water changing daily until that’s passed.

Been a while and I forgot to update again, but the second cycle passed ok, and the ammonia never made it above 0.5 mg/l so all was good.
I’ve fitted a 3 stage dechlorinator today, feeding into a part 2 float valve, so filter cleans are now a 5 minute job as opposed to having to wait around with the hose until it was full again. Now I just need to get a second outside tap fitted by the unit to save me needing to run the hose across the whole garden.
And some more exciting news, I’ve had a measure up and I think I just about have space for a nexus 220, but that’s a next summer job...

Looking good. I need to consider a water treatment really for my pond build. I have one of those 3 canister filters but don’t think it will be enough for the pond. Depends on flow rate I guess more than anything.
better to have a permanent water supply with a valve too in my opinion, much neater.

A 20" jumbo big blue 3 pod will easily process mains pressure at full chat.
With my low water pressure (7-8 lpm) a 10" jumbo handles my mains at full chat with the right cartridges and zero chlorine out the other side.
If you want more info I started a long thread about it in the water section.

Plumber coming tomorrow to fit a tap specifically for the pond so the 3 pod on the float valve can be left on constantly, rather than getting the hose across the garden each time. Also hoping he might have a black float for the part 2 valve knocking about in his van

Hey, I've just finsihed reading thorugh your build and you've done a super job. It looks great.
I'm hoping to start my own build soon and I will be aiming for something like yours. I'll start my own build thread when I do but I wanted to ask you a couple of questions about your build if you don't mind.
1. It looks as if the floor anchors are sitting about 100mm from the concrete so have you just drilled and slotted your sleepers onto these or did you counter bore the sleeper to attach nuts to the anchors?
2. Did you insulate or put anything between the sleeper/concrete/soil and the underlay/liner?
Thanks Matt

Thanks Matt!
You’re right with the floor anchors, the sleepers are just drilled and slotted on. As for the insulation, there is none. The sides were done with carpet and pond underlay, but no insulation. I may regret this down the line but then again, softwood is relatively good at insulating, do fingered crossed
I look forward to seeing your build!
