    New Pond surface skimmer

Hi guys I'm new to the forum and this will be my first koi pond I'm building.
I'm on quite a tight budget so trying to get everything together first before I start.
The pond will be 3 meters x 3 meters x 1.5 meters. And built out of 6 inch hollow block. With re bar and back filled with concrete. I'll have 2 infinity windows when I get them at the right price. I'll have an aerated bottom drain gravity fed multi bay fillter 30w if light 3kw heater bakki shower. And a surface skimmer and it's the skimmer I'm having problems with

I can't find a type that is suitable. Because of the position of it. The pond will be built in front of my shed where the filtration system will be. And I want/need the fillter to be on the back wall where the shed is so I won't have access to it to clean it out. So I need somthing that goes through the pond wall and through the shed wall so I can clean it out in the shed. The pond wall will be 6 inch block 1 inch insulation on inside, 2 inch batton on outside of block with 2 inches of insulation inbetween battons. Then 1 inch cedar cladding on outside then an additional gap of 1 inch between cedar and shed wall and finally 1 inch of shed cladding so if my maths are correct that's 12 inches from inside pond wall to inside shed wall. I'd also prefer to use a submersible pump if possible.ill try and get some photos of where the pond will be

Any ideas or suggestions you guys have would be much appreciated
    Thanks Colin

Something like this built into the blockwork which then feeds into the filter bay?

    Thanks for the reply guys.
I have looked at those type and would work especially if I bought an extention piece as well. The only downside is I think they run off and external pump which would be another cost. I already have several submersible pumps.
Do you know what sort of flow I would need for one of these skimmers and a pond my size

Most submersible pumps will run as an external pump. Its usually just a case of taking the plastic cage off.
    This video covers it briefly

    Thanks for the link.
I just thought I had heard somewhere that a submersible pumps motor runs hotter than a dry pump. And so they need to be in the water to keep them cool otherwise they don't last long

Looking at that could you fit a couple of those extensions, with a guard on front to stop a nosy koi.
you could just run two pumps one to the main filter and one on the skimmer with the uv and heater.

Run the hose and pump as a dry but drop pump in a bucket of water to stop the risk of over heating

I think that's the way I will be going with it. I always had plans of running 2 pumps. Just not sure what to run where.
I know they are old school and a lot of people say don't bother with them they are a lot of messing about cleaning brushes but. I've got a multi bay And I was planning on using large filter socks on each section where the water comes over the top of each chamber To catch a lot of the crap.

I have a 30w uv light and 3kw heater but I was only planning on using the heater during the colder months to keep the pond above 12 degrees..
I'll have the skimmer too .ill also have several pumps 2 around 180lpm and one pump around 60lpm . And 2 100lpm air pumps. But I also wanted to do more in the way of biological filtration. Either moving bed or bakki shower. But didn't want a waterfall so think bakki is out of the question

This is a quick drawing of how it will be I've not shown the uv and heater connected. Because I'm not sure if they should be on main filter or the skimmer

It won't overheat, that is a myth. It constantly has water passing through it to cool it.
Most of them are designed to do both functions. Google the model number of your pump and download the original instruction manual. It will usually say in there somewhere.

Thanks for all the replies. Do you know what size pumps I should be running. 1st one for the multi bay. And 2nd for the skimmer. Also where would you put the uv and heater? Both after multi bay. Or both after skimmer. Or on on each.

If it was me I would buy a couple of variable pumps, probably a 2000 on the filter so I could run 2inch pipework. The other a 1000 on the skimmer with the uv and heater running.
you can turn them down and control the flow

Thanks when you say 2000 and 1000 I'm presuming you mean gallons per hour ??

The variable 2000 are normally 2inch in and out the 1000 tend to be 1.5inchs in and out but the heater and uv will probably be 1.5 in and out and you are better off running them slightly slower for better contact time for uv and heat

Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think those pumps would be big enough for my pond. It will be 3mx3mx1.5m so around 13500 litres and going off the rule of the water should be circulated at least once every 2 hours. Shouldn't I be pumping a minimum of about 7000lph

Yeah I would have thought so, I'd go a bit bigger. What size pumps do you have?

20,000 ltr an hour just from one pump and a 10,000 sorry typing from phone
you will probably find the multi bay won’t filter that quick
