    Pond 2.0

After inheriting the existing pond and critters, 1.5x2.0x0.7 (~1700l) with a 2500l pump and 4500 sized canister six years ago, this has since been upgraded to a 6000l pump and 9000 revolution several years ago.. the critters are now short of space, so pond 2.0 has been approved.

The final size has to fully agreed but it’s likely to be a triangle 3.7m front, 2.5m side and 1.6m back planned 1.8m depth giving about 6,675l. My initial target was about 7,500l.

The new filtration has already been ordered:
    Dracodrum Solum16
    Dracodrum Std Bio with 50l Hel-x 13
    EA Varipump 20000

The kit will run on the old pond alongside the existing filter for a few months until I can order the blocks etc for the new pond. I’ll use my existing oase aquaoxy 500 on the bio and slowly wind down the existing filter so the new one pick up the slack.
I have the kit to convert from pump to gravity when the filter moves over and will get a UVC when needed along with the final plumbing (4” bottom drain and 63mm on the back side of the filter).

Things you do for 5 koi.

As this is a long thread and something that may be useful for people considering building their own pond:

The delivery driver soon realised why I asked for them to be delivered to the gate..

    IMG_7123.jpg

    Solum 16.

    4" inlets, outlets and waste.

Standard Bio filter insides - top inlets, bottom outlets. I asked for these to be all 4".

To my surprise I got connectors (old pond in the background)

The second sensor is the sensor required for gravity fed vs the pump fed as it will run on the old pond to mature whilst Pond 2.0 gets built. It's odd how they haven't made that a simple reversible connection.

The design is decent, the build quality is good (although theres' some untidy straggling PVC welds you may pick out). It's not a metal marvel - functional but not overly prettied but it will do the job

Now if only the other half of the order didn't disappear into the Covid19 chaos then I would have had the pump, switch box and pipework!

Is your pipework on order mate or your supplier currently unavailable?

I’m happy to help if needed mate.

It's on order - so it's in the pipes so-to-speak.

First test of the drum filter to make sure everything is working - all good I was taking a video for a mate that has a new pond, so:

With the lid on it's less noisy and by the time the system is in it's final position, it will be in a filter pit with a roof.

So I fitted the filter to the old pond, made some modifications to block some of the output of the bio (still waiting on the 4" boots etc) and moved the old filter bio and foam blocks (well more sludge and bio) to the new system. The old media has a very light tea colour - so I'm hoping the air and constant water flow unlike the old filter results in a good continued growth before the new filter material finally arrives.

The pond was like a mud bath, drum running every minute, I found that running the wash on 2 cycles per wash worked better and the output was a lot smoother. Hideous amounts of poop have come out of both the old filter bio and the pond - at 6am this morning the filter was showing 58 mins between washes, this morning it was back down to 9 mins.

The water is clear but not completely clear yet - the filter is still pulling stuff out, and I suspect the pump impeller needs a clear again (third time!).

The fish are ravenous this morning and are unfazed by my appearance waterside - probably after spending yesterday doing the work. I've fed them and they're having ago at the algae.. so I suspect I'll have little blanket weed (I did just enough blanket answer a couple of weeks ago to stop the bloom).

On the design side - we spend the yesterday gardening and the mrs seems happier with the size of pond and even asked if we can have a window (my answer - as long as the budget is expanded for it ). I think she's also decided that she's happy with one year of garden mess as she wants raised beds for example.

Delayed delivery arrived - Pump, switch box, bio media and pipework for the temporary setup on the old pond

I’ll sort it out after work.

Hmm think I’m missing a 2” connector but I have an idea

Well everything’s hooked up to the new switch box.

The varipump 20000 is far more efficient than the aquaforce 6000. Running at 20% through 1.5” pipe it’s using less power than the 6000.

Im a fan of the vari pumps (when used externally), I use them myself and sell a good number. Value for money, reliable and economical.

    Great update mate

It was a bit dark last night by the time I finished wiring and clearing up (all I could see was the digits but the phone obviously has better eyesight!). Just setup like this so I can monitor for the first few days.

Will arrange something when I have the chance. The sun may be out and fish visible!

I'll be interested to see how the varipump 20000 performs, I'm running two Jebao XOE-20000 @200watts each

Pond build is coming on nicely, but as Fred says, "we do like pictures"
4600 Gallon Concrete Block and Fiberglass
2100 mm x 710 mm Infinity Window 32mm thick glass
2 x Aerated Bottom Drains and Skimmer
    Filtreau HiFlow 30 Drum Filter
    Bio Chamber - 140 litres K1
Bakki Shower - 30 KG Sakura Far Infrared Media
    2 x 18,000 lh pumps
Heated from house boiler through a heat exchanger

Finally managed to get some time (unlike everyone else I'm working from home and it's all busy busy.

So the design for Pond 2.0...

    IMG_7346 2.jpg

    I've calculated for a 1.75m depth - 70-75 cm above ground.

    I calculated the area as:
    a = 2x ( 0.5*2.245 + 1.1*2.245) = 4.7145 sq m
    b = 0.5 *2.5 = 1.5 sq m

    Total Area: a+b = 6.2145 sq m

    Total Volume: 1.75 * 6.2145 = 10.875 m3 = 10,800 liters.

    If I just took a then this would be 1.75 * 4.7145 = 8.25 = 8,250 litres.

This is with wall thickness, blocks would be 21.5cm wide. However I think I may try to put the blocks outside of the volume to keep it as large as possible but the water level will probably be a little lower than the top of the wall - hence probably ~9-10K volume with some rounding of corners and insulation.

    IMG_7340.jpg

The filter pit will sit behind the pond - the wall for the pond will be flat 7N dense concrete blocks. The filter house sides and back will probably be end on so the walls would be 10cm with insulation and a roof.. The pond itself I think will have Celotex insulation and fibreglassed.

Behind the waterbutt is a garage drainpipe - so a 3m run for the waste pipe will sit under the remaining paving stone will get back to the filter pit. The water will need running from the house and the garage will need to be connected to the house mains by an electrician.

A single 4"/110mm aerated bottom drain (JBR current favourite). The filter will be a 4" gravity fed Draco Solum 16 + standard bio (currently running on the old pond to mature the bio media) then into 63mm to a varipump 20,000lph pump and then a perhaps two mid water returns and a waterfall. In terms of UVC I'm still undecided - I could make a chamber on the end of the bio that performs a 90deg bend before the pump and place the UV bulb in there. The BD will enter top right into the filter pit, the filter along the pond wall and the pump on the top left. water flow will be anti-clockwise.

Originally I had targeted a design volume of about 9,000 and 10,000lph rate hence going for a 16,000lph max drum and 185l bio that would support up to 18,000l.

In addition to the location and tight squeeze of the filter, we get buses turning around a roundabout close by, so oddly we get a bit of resonant vibration in the house - the back garden is sat on sand. This means it really needs a compacted hardcore base and then concrete slab to support the walls and fibreglass. I don't want any settlement or any ground water issues. I've dug down a meter before and laid concrete, so it seems that it's still above the water table. I've checked the local plans and there are no pipes according to those - I've lifted the manhole in the back garden and the only pipe is the one that goes towards the garage drain pipe.

I will go for "water proof" blocks, but I will also paint those above the ground, on the front - I'm considering a basic rendering and paint - the mrs has suggested a window.. so the blocks may end up having a neater brick front at some point. The Mrs wants sleeper raised beds so I suspect that the front of the blocks will end up with sleepers in front to blend in.

Now I have the fun of making a bill of material.. and presenting it to the wife.

I tried to work from home yesterday, it didn't end well but I did get a lot of work done in the garden, unfortunately i'll be working away from home next week so no more gardening for me

The JBR bottom drains are good but do check them when you get them delivered (by any supplier) mine was damaged in the transit and had a hairline crack it it, which I didn't find until two days before the concrete arrived

Your wife is correct (obviously), you do need a window
