Didn’t stop raining! Only job outdoors was to sort out a dripping gutter :/

Three pond related jobs today: order skip, order 45s, plan bill of materials for wood for cover.

I will look at something like a 3x3 up pole (note that these both will have existing fence pole and spur, along with a 8x2xfront span, 6x2xmid span. then 2x2 ribs (or 4x2 ribs). Not sure yet.

Been an overly busy week at work and home. However skip number two order - it should be here next week.

In other news - my Draco drum is out of action again. The float switch stopped the pump as the drum failed to self clean. On investigation the drum controller had a puddle of water in it shorting the PSU 240V live to earth. It blew the fuse in the Matsuka switch box and on replacing that it appears that the PSU is dead (I assume the internal PCB fuse). I've tried a different 12V PSU temporarily and the drum washed fine. I think I've traced the culprit being the buttons on the front which I will change and I will add earthing connections for the buttons too.

I'll leave the drum updates to the product review in the other sub forum.. but the second skip arrived a day early. Luckily I was cooking lunch and not on video conference with customers. Experience has now taught me that delivery dates are +/- 1-2 days and collection can be +5 days on advising them it's ready to collect!

Oddly feeling quite relieved and happy to get the mountain moved as of Saturday it's got to the point of stepping on the mound to get over it.

    You'd have thought!

The father-in-law contracted Covid19 whilst going in for a routine operation, two weeks ago we had to make a mad dash to France. The wife managed to talk to him in intensive care but after being put into an artificial coma he passed away last week so after the funeral I've just returned and in quarantine. The skip company have been (so far I've talked to the subcontracted skip company locally and I've not heard a peep out of REM waste from a email explaining the situation) understanding.. the skip was blocked in by a car so they couldn't collect but that gives me time today and tomorrow to get it filled as much as possible.

    Anyways - the dig continues..

So .. just as I had to leave for France and the state yesterday on my return..
    62584980381__B3AF8107-F1C1-4FCB-9C10-27877AFCE412.jpeg

And today (I've done two barrow loads after dusk):
    IMG_8284.jpeg

    So I'm cream-crackered.

I will continue with a couple of barrows when I can tomorrow - assuming they don't want to collect the skip.. I should be able to clear the pile

Well I got another 5 barrow loads today but they collected the skip today out of the blue. Not a problem as they've held out for the time in France.

The road plate was awesome - literally picked up, throw it down and loaded skip lorry had no problem going over it.

So I still have a bit less than the photo but considering the eve-day-morning that I had it was better than nothing! Probably will get another skip - a smaller one this time around then load it up.

Back to digging - this time for the drainage move.

The green pipe route will need to be moved (including the rodding eye) leftwards to where the gold colour route will be, this removes the pipes from the location where the wall will be (red) and allow the positioning of the pond piping (blue). The nice thing is that the piping is push fit so it should simply reseat.. although I will need a connector for the shortened pipe as I'll be cutting off the normal push-fit end piece.

I probably complicate things and through the analyse-plan-implement is probably a little slower than most however with just me doing it, and the accessibility logistics, it saves a little bit in the long run by planning and going a little slower . The 5Ps Next issue is that the 5 meter sections of pipe sit in the way of digging in the garage.. so it's a bit like that shifting block game..

In terms of timing with winter approaching - it depends on the company delivering the concrete, but if heated concrete delivery is possible then you can lay down to 2degC but the concrete needs to be wrapped and the initial setting will be very slow and protected from freezing. Most places seem to indicate 5-10degC can still be laid with precautions (plastic and matting over the top for example). In the past I laid a telescope pier with temps dropping below freezing at night by covering and putting an oil radiator under the covers but this is larger.
The short of it is that unless you cover the area, warm it to 10degC (and the blocks if block laying) then it's a no go - the mortar will be disintegrating and separating from the blocks within a year or two.

If I get the piping down and backfilled, the site prepped to reduce erosion by water/frost then it can be overwintered. I would have liked to have the slab laid and the first few rounds of blocks laid - annoying with all the delays but I'm not going to beat myself up about it.

    So:
    * Garage slab is 150mm ~5-6inches on a SDS drill bit
    * Garage wall foundations are 680mm down from the door until then it's brickwork. I have 115mm and 150mm coring bits I've used before so this is looking straight forward.
    * Waste pipe is 110mm too so everything is 110mm except the air pipes (1").
    * Piping width will be about 400mm and I can then get all pipes through that width.

The Pond floor hole depth is currently 2090mm - or 340mm base and 1750mm of water depth above that.

Garden to water level 630mm, waste pipe is 1200mm below water level (and about 40cm below garden level) and the garage floor is 680mm below water level with a 150mm slab.

This info is needed for (a) the two return that comes back from the garage under the bio - these are the deepest pipes.

The bio base needs to sit 830mm below water level - the exit point of the pipe is meant to be about 130mm but mine are 110mm so this may differ a little.

So this means if the pipes for the returns need to go under the bio but exit the garage above the waste pipe (the existing drain is moved but there is a 110mm drainage pipe that comes in from off the property.

Measuring from the water level (this is were having a laser level that sits on a tripod is useful) it means the base of the bio unit is sat 150mm below the garage floor. I then have 370mm of space below that base to put in the return pipes which means I can run the returns under the base supporting the bio unit. However this is not the fun...
The fun is the centre of the outlet of the bio is 130mm above the base. at which point the water needs todo a 180. Not ideal but sometimes you have to make compromises. So in that space from the outlet to 370mm below the base I need to fit the pipe and, as originally designed, two large radius 90 degree bends which have a radius of 300mm. PLUS I would need to fit a 110mm valve in and they aren't small. Originally I had thought of running the returns part above the garage floor and then drop down under at the point the inlets rise through it..

So the new idea is this - use a T for the inlet - (provides a way of cleaning too) and then run a large radius, the two return valve would then sit under the bio. An alternative is to mount the return valves on the up pipe of as it enters the pond with the added benefit if there's a leak it can be cut off at at the source of the water (the pond). It just is in an inconvenient location at the back of the pond so I need to think about the operation and the sweep of the lever.

    Sounds like a plan.

Next step - order.. with all the fun of blackfriday weekend and slow websites..

Last day of quarantine today - woot!

Edit: looks like week ahead of from 1-5degC at night so looks like pouring the slab will have to wait until next year.

Before - see the 90 bend and join and the rodding eye on the 45 down pipe....
    IMG_8337 2.jpg

Now - the corner cuts closer in at 45deg, the rodding 45 and drain will attach to the temporarily sealed 45T connection. This means it's water tight if it rains. Silicon spray makes fitting these a doddle. Also a small rasp deburrs and makes the fit easier.

    IMG_8339.jpg

You may note the closeness of the pipes to the base of the fence post (no real change there) but that post is actually secured to the garage wall by coach bolts already - it doesn't move.

So part one done. Next is to get the cut into the garage done and lay the first of the two return pipes as they're the deepest pipes in the rats nest.

Spent the first free time measuring up and marking out the final points - using a centre line on which the drum and the bio will sit - this gives me the trench in the garage and the final pipe locations. If you look on the doorstep you can see the marks. The laser gadget comes into it's own again - also spent the time clearing up I also made an initial list of pipe lengths.

    IMG_8347.jpg

You can see that the pipes run the length of the garage - 5 meter segments leave about a couple of inches, so they need cutting before I can set to work on the garage flooring.

The 110mm chamfer tool arrived yesterday so today I had chance to start cutting pipes. The tool is a breeze clean up the ends to stop the pipe from pushing all the glue to the end of the fitting - with over 50 pipe ends to prepare it's a time saver and ensures consistency. Tried the elbows for the first time - they work nicely. Cuts and pipe prep now fast with a manual mitre saw plus mitre box. A few more cuts and I will have enough space.

    IMG_8350.jpg

The runs to the back of the pond are a good 3-4m long. My plan here is to use a straight connector and cut the longer pipe runs in two. This allows the installation but allows the pipes to be manageable. I will not lay the external pipe all the way to the end of the pond until the base is poured and the block work has started (so next year). However this allows me to get the pipe work at this point laid and the bottom drain pipe work laid. I'll tape over some plastic to protect the pipe from UV/weather and stop anything nesting in it.
