Marine Reefing to Koi - My build thread
Hi folks,
I’m new to the forum. After growing up with all things aquatics since a young age, Ive kept everything from marines, trops and cold water apart from Koi. Always been a keen carp angler too, so it’s destined to happen at some point.
I’ve been lurking about in the forum for a while now and watching no end of YouTube videos etc looking for ideas. If you’ve got any suggestions of channels, subscriptions, etc, then hit me up
Last year I converted part of my garage into a fish room to house coral trays etc, but I’m thinking I might swap that out and use it to house a filtration room for a koi pond - it would be a bit of a long line to pipe back to the location of the pond, but I’m confident with the right pumps and insulating pipe work etc it’s achievable. Having a fish room for the koi filtration also means I have running water and electrics etc in there and can access the room through the back of the house meaning it’s easy for maintenance (also have access to the room from an external door too).
My garden isn’t the biggest, so I don’t want a huge pond, but certainly want something that’s big enough to house a select few high end koi long term. I’m keen to have something a bit different than a standard raised square box too and will be relandscaping the garden jap style - I’ve been collecting some screen shots of others to make a scrap book of ideas.
In terms of filtration kit, it’s all fairly new to me and would welcome guidance. From what I’ve seen though, a floor drain is essential, nexus look good and a UV will be a sure thing (I run UV on my reef tank). Also would fit a trellis cover and want a viewing window too
Here’s a few photos of locations etc
It would be located in this far right corner (trees would be removed) and quite fancy a raised pond with a curve sort of effect (Ignore the swings and sand pit, they’d go).
Pipe run to the fish room / filtration kit etc
Fish / filtration room that would house all the kit out the way (ignore the mess, it would all go to make space - obviously still keep the sink and shelves)
Really keen to hear your thoughts I’m Notts based if anyone is around this area.
Thanks for reading
Cheers Chris

Hi mate welcome to the forum....
ideally pond needs to be 2000 gallons minimum with bottom drains, it looks quite a journey from filter room to pond location going by pics but i guess if pumps are powerful enough it should be ok, recommend that the pond and all associated pipework are well insulated, a slopping pond bottom with smooth rounded areas will help all food and debris to flow towards your bottom drains, most ponds are 4ft to 5ft depth, much deeper and it is difficult to net your fish, it seems gravity set ups are desirable however being so far away from pond/filter room it could be difficult to get your levels accurate, auto drum filtration seem to be popular and certainly easy on the maintenance front, i love mine, nothing to do really, i just play with float depth which determines how often your filter cleans this is depending upon time of year and how much your feeding, if i could change anything to my set up it would be having the drum set lower in the water, most of the time there is around 40% exposed out of the water, looks like drums being 70% + submerged helps with cleaning, you will need to ensure very good mains water pressure at your spray bar for effective cleaning, waste drainage needs to be thought about, do you have a sewer pipe in your garden you can tap into ? i have only had my pond for just under a year, there are lots of others on here with many years of experience who will help you mate........cheers Steve.Last edited by smartin; 29-03-2020 at 04:09 PM.

Thanks Steve that’s great - I was thinking about 4,000 to be honest based on what I’ve seen and the space I have

Very nice size Chris, when do you think you will start digging lol, if you use some string / rope you can start to play with outlines to get an idea on shape.....i would of liked to have had a curve or two in my pond but space did not allow unfortunately......

Assume the tree's are not protected before you go chopping good luck removing the roots, will you be using a small digger?? just a quick thought looking at your pictures what way do your sewer lines run, check that there is nothing running underground across your garden like sewage / water etc before you start digging....

Yeah mini digger all day long - I grew up driving them, so it would be rude not to get one in on hire.
Lovely build mate, I’ll have to check out your build thread.
Here’s the shape lined out with hose of what I was thinking. I’ll leave a run down the side of the fence side, so I can access all round given the depth front to back will be long.
So the back wall side would be 10ft and fence length would be 15ft

I curved mine like that so little one couldn't run in to a sharp corner . Wish I didn't at times tho made a window a grand more ( needless to say I didn't get one ) find covers a bit of a mare as I want them to fit perfect and they dont . Are you fiberglassing it ? I used a liner and wished I hadn't again for the folds that the curve made mint for water flow tho

Thanks - yeah that’s similar shape to what I’m thinking. What are you dimensions and total volume of water?
I’m intending on putting a window in - they’re a lot of money anyway aren’t they, from what I’ve seen!
Good point on the cover, never thought of that. I 110% intend on fibre glassing yeah, seen too many people say they wish they had done it - think I’ll have to get someone to do that bit though.
Been speaking with Quality Nishikigoi - he’s suggesting 2 drains and 2 nexus for pristine water.

Marine Reefing to Koi - My build thread
Awesome - thanks for the tip.
Been watching countless YouTube videos on kit and filtration along side writes ups that are worth reading.
I just need to decide whether or not to close down my marine reef display tank as well as my coral trays now to help with cash. Be sad to see it go, but it would be costly running both systems
