Marine Reefing to Koi - My build thread
Did a drawing whilst on a work call today (I was listening honest who said men can’t multi task). I’ve not done the cherry trees that great, because they should be a but further to the right (the one is actually on the bend), but you get the gist.
We’re thinking white textured wall to the pond and raised flower bed, with a mix of plants - probably ever green Jap sort of style.
Also had the council confirm today that the trees don’t have TPO’s on them, so we’re good to remove them, which is a big tick in the box.
Terrible I know, but gets the thinking juices going and helps the mrs to see what I’m planning to get her buy in

I wish boys - this won’t be a fast one sorry, but it will be worth the wait
I’m investigating with the council at the minute to see if there’s any scope to move the waste drains to a new location - it would free me up so much space if I could, so it’s worth trying (even if it costs me)!
Next step of this build is have a look around some koi stores to get ideas on what kit I want (when this lockdown ends) and sell all my Reefing stuff (which is shifting quite quick already ).

I’ve got my eye on one of these at the minute - anyone have experience of them? Steve has a Combi I think.
I’ve got plenty of space in the fish room, so my question would be should I get a Combi or separate drum and bio filtration? I plan on also having a large vat to house media in too as some sort of shower/river type thing.
Also, what do people do to avoid flooding if pumps switch off? Because my piping from the drain to filtration room is so long, I’m thinking I’ll either need some sort of fancy valve or enough room in a vat to take extra water should I get a power cut.

From what I have read the combi dosnt hold massive amounts of bio media where a quick email to jbr plastics gets you a mint bio chamber as big as you like

if your drum and gravity then it should not flood? the water will rise inside your drum if pumps are turned off but it will just equalise out, i have a small overflow outlet in the top of my skimmer box just in case something weird happens but to date it only ever vacates additional water volume that i put in via the trickle......regarding drum set up well good luck in choosing

I've got a overflow in my skimmer, its main purpose is to set the height of the pond water, which means I can trickle water in, therefore its a constant water change, i'll dig out some picture if I can find them
The back of the skimmer is the square box, inside that is a 1" pressure pipe you can see coming out the bottom, this is height adjustable so the water height can be changed, the more water you trickle in to the pond, the more water that goes out of the overflow, for me this goes to drain in the winter and to the garden in the summerLast edited by RoyLittle0; 06-04-2020 at 08:46 PM.

Marine Reefing to Koi - My build thread
Right then folks, I have a new pond location plan basically after adding all the block work etc in the original corner plot, my volume was barely 2,000 gallons total.
So I had a drainage chap out and whilst we agreed unfortunately the drains couldn’t be moved, he confirmed where the drains go across the garden. I’ve now mapped out a new plot that actually works better for a few reasons:
1. The kids play area can stay in the same place and this can be a dedicated area that’s barked off rather than grass
2. I can have a pond that totals ~3,600 gallons
3. The pond can be seen from all 3 house ground floor windows at the back of the house
4. The pond will join onto the patio
5. It’s no where near as bulky as I thought it would be and actually works better having the pond in this location than what was meant to be the new swing spot
The challenge will be a longer route for the piping across the garden to the fish room, but not that much more to be fair.
So here’s my thoughts - welcome yours...
Also during this week, I’ve sold nearly all my coral and fish out of my reef tank and coral tray, so just got the kits to sell once the final bits have gone.
Whilst I’ve been planning I’ve been like a kid in the sweet shop looking at what kit I want to run my pond - I’ve gone massively over board, but I like reef keeping, we keep water not fish and buy once else you’ll regret it. So on that, my kit list basket currently includes:
QK35 Drum filter (with UV)
QK150 Bio chamber with 150ltr K1
Crystal Bio Shower filter inc 100ltr Crystal bio (this closed drum will be in the fish room, to avoid a shower on side of pond)
EA Air Pumps x2 95
EA Varipump 20,000ltr x2
Thermotech Heat Pump
RO top off box
2x Bottom aerated drains
2x surface skimmers
Things I’d also like on the pond (has anyone done either of these):
1. Under water lighting
2. Programmable blade fountain (want it on in the summer day time only) - this’ll just need to be a programmable pump i expect
In the fish room, I’m also planning on having a quarantine system too, which at present will include:
QK15 drum filter
QK Midi shower
500 gallon quarantine vat
I have an RO unit and 2x 250ltr food grade water containers for spare RO water. My RO unit is pretty slow because I don’t have a pump on it yet and it’s got 1x micro filter 1x carbon block 2x membranes and 2x DI Resin pods (super clean RO output). Is this RO output to complex for koi water? If so should I just get the simple EA dechlorinator?
Again welcome your thoughts.
