2000 gal pond extension project
So, you may remember me from my over optimistic 5000gal teardrop pond plans, those plans have sadly been pushed back about 5 years. But all is not lost! I still have a project, I知 planning to extend my existing pond in all directions, including up! I won稚 be putting a window in this one because it is still a relatively temporary pond.
I have broken ground today and just opened up the top to be roughly the size and shape I知 looking for, Thankfully I have plenty of time to work on it now!

Ok, you asked for it!
This is the pond as it was last summer.
This is the temporary pool for the fish (and then for me when they go into the newly built pond!)
Starting the dig.
I知 taking it very slowly with the digging - got 3 weeks before I can do much with it anyway, so may as well just do a couple of hours exercise each day with digging!
Not sure yet how I知 going to extend upwards, thinking maybe sleepers along the fence and brick round the rest.

I致e not been well for a week or so but finally fit enough to do a little more digging today I致e got past the clay at the smaller end but am down to very stony ground at the larger end, definitely going to need something other than a spade to loosen it up.

I致e had another couple of weeks off digging while I致e been getting back into the swing of working from home, I致e come to restart my digging and have found around 20 bees digging nests in the walls of the pond...
I feel like I should let these guys do their thing considering bee numbers are declining across the world so I guess the pond build is on hiatus for a while...

A very admirable attitude, however not sure if you realise they nest for 2-3 months?

Ah these are not bumble bees, these are solitary bees, even though there is a lot of them! They are each digging out one tunnel, I値l have to do a bit of research tomorrow and see if I can find out how long they nest for.

Well, after reading up it seems I would be best to evict the bees now so they can find another nest site, otherwise I値l be postponing for over a year

its a shame for sure ATS but like you say you will be waiting a long time, they will move off and rehome, when my pond was being built a swarm of bees from a neighbouring garden rose into the air like a big black cloud and flew literally over our heads a few landed around us, it was like a scene from the swarm and i dont mind admitting it was a bit scary as we had no time to react other than to stand dead still....... very un nerving

I have solitary bees. They are great. They just disappear when you approach and re appear when you are gone. Did a little googling on them when we moved here and general consensus was that they are rarely aggressive. Had them here 6 years, started digging the pond and they just moved somewhere else in the garden. Never been stung yet.

It has been a long time since I did any work on the pond! I知 back in business now though and determined to get it done (with a little help from a pond builder) before the weather turns too cold - so far this is where we are up to.
