It was the subject of a few controversial threads a while ago...

Hi chaps,
Another tiny update. Today I got a couple of young labourers working on building my anoxic baskets as I've been too busy to make a lot of progress...
So here's a small video that I took when I popped in to see how they were getting on.
https://youtu.be/vibJLRcA_lg
Quick video of the construction of Anoxic filters, using 29x29x20 baskets, Moler Medium Grain Bonsai Soil Growing Media (from https://www.kaizenbonsai.com/moler-m...-growing-media) and Aqua Basis.
For those that haven't come across them before, the baskets are part filled and then 400g of Aqua Basis is placed into a section of nylon tights and tied off and located in the centre of the basket which is then surrounded and covered in more soil growing media.
I'm using some offcuts of 25mm water pipe to create separation between each layer of two baskets (which are cable tied together) so that I can stack them in the pit created for this purpose. Hopefully these will also give me something sturdy to lift them out when needed also.
Finally, they are covered with the gussets / bum section of a pair of tights to help prevent any dirt settling into them and also to prevent the Moler medium failing out if they get tipped up.Plan is to make 24 baskets, in pairs as seen in the video. So 12 units, spread in the filter bay as a stack of 3 across by 4 high.

Another video update chaps. I would make time for a sit down with a beer or cuppa for this one, 20+ minutes of waffle here!

Certainly a lot of progress Barry, all looking great and moving in the right direction, albeit one step back on the pool again, but hey, fish in the pond woo how

Hi all,
just a small update this evening. I now have 5 fish in the pond. I put the first 3 in for a period of three weeks and with nothing registered on the ammonia, nitrite and nitrate readings decided to put another two in. They’ve been in there for about a week now.
I am however struggling to deal with high pH, getting readings of 9 despite adding a 1kg bag of Kusuri BioBalance as I was advised this will help bring it down as well as buffer swings. This hasn’t made any difference despite saying it can treat 156,000 litres (I have 50,000 litres).
I have subsequently added 9kg of bicarbonate of soda over a number of days which has made a small difference but I’m like 9.0 rather than 9.1!
Pond filtration is anoxic baskets which appears to be working well, still nothing on all three tests. I have a kH reading of 11 drops using the NTlabs kit and gH of 13.
Any ideas what I should try next or do I need a larger amount of bicarbonate of soda for 50k litres?

Meant to add, my expectations are that Bicarbonate of soda will bring me to 8.3-8.4 but I think that would be fine for me for now compared to what I have.

Sounds odd - could it be a dodgy test kit? What's the Ph reading out of the tap?

bi carb will only buffer up to 8.3 not down to 8.3 and increase KH.
if there is something else that is pushing the ph higher it won't have any effect with a KH of 11 already.
i'd verify the ph with another test kit or preferably an electronic tester/monitor, as it varies throughout the day.
to see if you do have a high ph, or a swing from early morning to evening.
if it's fixed high at 9 then there is probably something pushing it up.
common with new ponds is something cementious based, or runoff going in the pond with rain.
or if a swing morning to evening usually algae/weed.

Hi,
I was under the impression that BiCarb would buffer down also, but if not, then no point putting any more in!
So I've just been out and run tests again with the following results.
New NTLabs test kit:

Cheapo digital pH tester

Old API test kit (both normal range and high range - not sure what bloody colour the high range is trying to represent) - maybe this kit is past it's best!

Tap water using NTLabs kit:

Tap water using cheapo digital meter.

I was thinking about something leaching, but I can't imagine what. Given that the pond is fully fibreglassed and the fibreglass is finished into the pipework, there is only fibreglass, pipework, rubbers and drums that the water touches...

Running heater at low temp?
Covering the pond with polycarb should be enough to stop water temps dipping below 6C for the most...
