Sorry to hear . yet again . . of a flooding issue.
Silver lining in that you have sussed another issue and can get it resolved before you finish your project, , thinking ahead it would be more costly and impact on a finished project (outside works)
Thinking back . what have you done in your past
you must of done something for all this BAD Luck. . . . . crossed a black cat ?? hahaha ran over a black cat. ?? stood on a crack in the paving ?
could be a whole new interesting POST1000 gal

Right, basement is drying out now that I've removed all of the carpets etc after having them dried. Just a skim of damp across the floor which is drying already, so fingers crossed, we managed to prevent most of the damage...
And back to the pond...
I finally got to do a mock installation of the first airlift last weekend. I've just added the videos below (via YouTube). Apologies, but somehow I stopped the video part way through so it's in two parts...

I also spent some time last night on setting up my latest incarnation of my energy monitoring setup... Ultimately this is supposed to help me understand why my electricity bill is so high, right now that will be because the ground source heat pump is heating the basement floor and the air-conditioning is drying out the basement air, so the two are intentionally at odds with each other, burning up power in order to release the moisture and remove it.
This is the primary consumer unit for the 3 phase supply we have - 250 Amp and monitoring for 4 distribution outputs on each of the phases. One these 3 phase supplies goes to the garage where it is distributed to 3 consumer units in the house, one for the garage and one for the pond. All of those 5 consumer units are backed up by a single phase 9kW LPG generator (we live in the sticks and power glitches are fairly common!), so in the event of a power cut, the house and pond will have power (as long as I have enough gas in the bottles!).
I'm just waiting for the 3 phase heat pump supply to be moved into this main consumer unit so that I can add the power monitors to those circuits and then I will have a complete picture of the energy consumption / solar generation.
My plan is to then drill into each location consumer unit where the energy usage is high and identify which circuits are drawing most power and hopefully come up with some alternatives. I already have plans to operate the pond off of leisure batteries charged by the solar, although I'm not sure I have room for this in the pit. I was going to mount the batteries on a shelf underneath the drums, but Im not so sure now, especially given the wet environment. I might build another box to locate them just next to the pit.

Average £350 per month. We use 25 mega Watt hours per year. On the flip side before the eco warrior types jump in, we generate 29 mega Watt hours from our large solar array. However, with the seasons of the year and passage of night and day, we are still buying plenty of electricity.
in the winter, we can consume 100-150 kWh in a day and if it’s a dark and dismal day maybe only generate 4-5 kWh.
conversely in the summer, we might use 50kWh but generate 200kWh!
I expect that to change this year as all the spare summer energy will be heating the pool if my plans work out. Leaving only winter to improve on. I fear my best option here though will be batteries and purchasing energy through the night at cheap rate to use during the day.

Oh and in case anyone’s looking for a progress update, forget it, basement flooded again today as did the garage and workshop. Garage and workshop had a few inches of water in them, basement t same as last time just seeping in.
fire brigade would only help for a short while as there was no danger to life. Managed to hire a couple of petrol powered water pumps and put an additional 4 110v pumps in the hole and shift the water past next doors broken ditch. Just finished putting the petrol pumps away along with the digger which I was using to keep warm and provide lighting at around mid night from 8am this morning. My wife and friends have been keeping on top of the basement all day until they went around 5pm, my wife has soldiered on this evening and I’ve been helping since I came in. Seems to have finally abated at 2am. Thankfully my mother in law is bubbled and could come take care of the kids.
what a year this has been. Bloody blocked ditch causing so much grief, he has someone starting on it in Monday.

What a time you're having. Back in the day, I waterproofed basements and converted them into living space, could be a challenging job.

My god you are really going through it at the moment. Sounds awful.
How comes you are so prone to flooding? Are you in a dip, with run off coming from the surrounding area?

We're actually relatively high up, but we the road does run downhill as it goes past us and the fields across the road are higher. So we're not in a dip as such, but it seems a lot of water passes this way! And when the ditches don't work, that becomes a problem. About 3-400 yards down the road there is a dip where all the water pools and blocks the road when we have excessive rain like the night before, it usually dissipated after 3-4 hours.
Still confused about the basement as the house was only built in 2008 and Im assured properly tanked. It is a bit of an odd design though as we have an open basement courtyard below ground next to the basement. The basement pumps weren't troubled this time, so I think the water has just saturated through the grounds, maybe there is a blockage stopping the water from around the structure getting to the pump area.

Either way it must be soul destroying having to deal with the issue on your house, what with all the other challenges you've had to face with the various projects you have going on.
I'm no drainage expert, so this may not work, but if its surface run off from nearby land (rather than the water table) that is running past your land and saturating your land in the process, as you have a digger, could you dig a channel out that circles round your house at the highest point, to try and intercept the water heading towards your house, and run the channel out to a point that is near the lowest point of the road, fill it with gravel, then back fill over the top?
You could bury 110mm waste pipe in the gravel and drill holes along the top of the pipe to ensure it fills with water?
Also planting trees and shrubs on your land might help protect your land from getting saturated and your house from flooding. Although admittedly that won't help you out in the short term.
Where my parents live, they are in a dip and had no problems with flooding. Their neighbours then chopped down three oak trees that ran along the boundary and since then my parents lawn is now almost permanently saturated with runoff from the land higher up from them. The difference those trees made in terms of keeping the land dry was stark.
Just thinking of solutions, as chances are it could flooding again this winter if we get any more heavy rain, especially if you have a wait on your hands for your neighbour to sort out their side of the drainage pipe/ditch.Last edited by Twhitenosugar; 15-01-2021 at 02:07 PM.

My sister keeps telling me to plant a load of trees. Planting hasn’t quite had my attention yet, need to get the grounds sorted first, but I think trees are in order.
there is actually a ditch that runs under the garden but since it currently joins the blocked ditch it’s not serving much purpose. I already have plans to add french drains to the garden area nearer the house, just haven’t got that far yet!
im about to order my own petrol powered water pump before the ones I have on hire are returned. Hopefully once next door sort their ditch next week the immediate problem will go away and give me some time to look into further solutions!

thanks Wain,
fortunately we’ve not seen much rain yet and the forecast looks reasonable compared to the rest of the country. There will be a couple of nights that I’ll be on tenderhooks.
having a bit of a low period tonight. Too many problems just recently on top of a huge unfinished over-running over-budget project and for some reason having wobbles about the long term viability of the house water situation and money in general. Need to kick myself out of the hole.
My build team still aren’t back, their other project is also over-running, not expecting them back under first week of Feb now.
I have however prepared one of my Almalgam UV’s to go in the filter room and I’m planning on getting out to fit it tomorrow and check over the drum filter and air lift.
Hope everyone else is safe in these times, whether it’s from Covid or flood threats!

Stay strong and keep the dream alive Bazza, it’s defo been a tough year all round with COVID and winter weather wearing everything and everyone down, we are all willing you on too finish your project but sometimes the weather always gets in the way. Serious flooding issues is something I’ve never had to deal with, I can’t imagine the headaches your having to get this all right and ship shape. Anyway keep going matey and look forward to more build info and pics. Stay safe and free from COVID
