Ha, sorry guys, was in a bit of a silly mood yesterday. Combination of it being my birthday and placing returns in the pond got me all excited!!
so as part of placing pipes through walls in the filter area we needed to line up with the drum inlets / outlets. Since we don’t have the drums here yet (they arrive Monday), we had to mock one up from the online dimensions.

Ok, here’s today’s update. Been a bit frantic today. One of the mud walls caved in over night and pushed all the polystyrene wall out of shape, so first job of the day was to get all the clay out that had collapsed. Fortunately the steel held the polystyrene walls together and no damage done. Today’s job was to get the vertical braces in which straightened everything back up.
after this we had a few more holes to core through the walls and steel for the last of the pipes. There should be a pipe in place for everything now!
last job was to prepare the template for the glass wall so that it can be closed off after filling and most importantly to fix the location of the 5 x 25mm steel rebar that is going in the walls to form the posts for the glass. A bit more fiddling required with this in the morning before the concrete is pumped into the walls.
so a busy but exciting day. Oh and the drums turned up too, although haven’t had a chance to look at them yet!

and finally a bit of a rushed video showing progress from outside and inside the pond today!

Another update peeps.
Some reasonable progress in general, but everything’s so bloody big it all takes forever to do!
Had to postpone the fibreglassing that was due to start this week unfortunately, but it’s better to wait and get things right rather than rushing stuff. It’s not like the pond is the only part of the project that’s not finished!!!!
had a bit of bad news on the pool too, but it will get sorted in due course.
big thanks to Gaz at Aurora koi for supplying all the bits so far, I know it’s been a bit challenging at times, I appreciate your straight forward no nonsense honest service though mate.
oh and the real drums have arrived but they’re still in their boxes!
Apologies for the lockdown mullet, hopefully the hair dressers will open again soon!

cheers Fred. Not official as yet but they are asking for the tilers to quote for the remedial work so sounds positive. They are also modifying the specification to include the changes for the remedial action so that we have the changes recorded for the guarantee. Bizarrely they haven’t seen this before with this kind of substrate and finish and have used this make up previously, however it transpires that this is the first outdoor pool they have specified with the insulated concrete forms, I think it’s used more commonly on indoor pool builds as the insulation meets the building regs for insulation an indoor pool. Funny how this information only comes to light afterwards! Still, they are a massive company and specialise in this stuff so I’m hoping we are protected. If I’d researched it and picked it all for myself like I have with pretty much everything else then that would definitely be hitting me in the wallet!
Still can’t believe how much we’re spending on pipework and fittings. Gaz done me a cracking deal (and service) though so he’s looking after me. Got even more pipes on the pool but thankfully no 4” !!!
i think that filter pit is going to get tight when stuff starts going in there!

Fantastic thread to follow Bazza, really cannot wait to see how it looks finished and landscaped. Credit to you for having the vision (and funds!) to create what I am sure will be one of the best Koi ponds out there! Keep the updates coming! Cheers

Thanks a lot. We probably spent a good 12 - 18 months on the design before we got stuck in. Before that we were planning on moving in here and getting cracking in the garden within a few months as the fish needed somewhere to go. Unfortunately. we had a severe flood 10 weeks after we moved in which meant that all our time and money for the garden ended up being invested in re-doing the house and the fish ended up in a vat and then eventually a fibreglass grow on tank. To be honest, it was probably a good thing as it allowed us to get a feel for the space before committing to anything.
3 years on and we got started, it will be 1 year in the making since we "broke ground" at the end of July! Something tells me we won't be done by then, but hopefully not far off.
The insulation is a great idea, I think its a very novel idea, hasn't taken off with the large house building companies, but certainly seems to be gaining some momentum. Insulation wise it's very good and for ease of build (as long as you don't want curves like we have) it's so easy to work with and quick too!
I think it will be some time before we get the soft landscaping done and it will certainly take some time to establish, but I'll keep the updates coming.

Thanks Scamp, you and I both!
We're on the upside now, past the worst (hopefully) so apart from the considerable disappointment I had recently with the pool (which knocked my enthusiasm for a couple of days I must admit) everything is going in the right direction and no more significant destruction or digging is required!
Will keep the updates coming, cheers.

Nice one mate. If I had a big company like the pool company. I would be bowing at your feet. To fix it free. Reason. Advertising
Your build. Imagine when people see all that lot in photos.
And want something similar. Ok maybe not on your build scale. But wow. What a seller that would be in a brochure. For building a pond or pool. Plus when it's all landscaped
And matured. Some selling advert lol.
Gaz helped me out as well with gear mate
And considering the lock down.
Gear was there pretty quick. And treatments. The 2 ochibas I got off him I am also well pleased.
When they grow. They will be a good addition
To the pond. Top man

I can hope Fred! Bizarrely they are much bigger than any pool company, a multi national, multi billion dollar company that manufactures building materials / adhesive etc. I would think that covering the rectification cost on our project is a tiny drop in the ocean for them. Unfortunately however, I don't think my project will feature in any of their literature, simply not big enough! They supply to projects like Cross Rail / TFL etc.
They actually called the tilers this morning and I ended up speaking with them, they came up with an offer to cover the cost of the materials. I told them that was unacceptable. Essentially they are offering to supply some silicon for the control joints and a tub of epoxy to replace what's being pulled out, maybe a few sheets of mosaic tiles and not covering the labour which will be the significant portion of any rectification. I've told them to go away and re-think it as it's not acceptable and we shall see what comes of that.
Poor old Gaz, he's had the proper run around with some of my swept 90 degree bends. First their distributor sent elbows, then only 1 of 7 swept bends turned up because the courier company has lost the other box, whereabouts still unknown to this day! We returned the elbows with the same courier that delivered the swept bend and Gaz received a drill!!!! . Gaz has been great though, keeping me updated with the mistakes that people have made and where things are at. Ultimately, he ordered another set of bends which turned up the next day while the missing box is being located. Can't say fairer than that.
