How far is too far?
I'm still at the planning phase........
Im considering putting my filter house 17m or so away from my pond .
Am I asking for trouble ?
Gravity fed Nexus on the bottom drain.
Easy pod on the Skimmer.
Pumps I have are Aqua forte DM Vario 20k and 10K.
Electrics wont be a problem.
Any advice welcome
Thanks

Make sure you install a purge valve as with a long run of pipe like you're wanting.... It'll need purging often to clear any debris out of the pipe

Thanks Andy,
There is no reason to avoid a long run ?
I suppose im more concerned about pumping it back?
Wouldn't be much head height ,

I've found that the Nexus and Easypod work well with a flow rate of about 10000 lph.
As long as you're getting a nice flow through them then it should fine.
Don't go to high with the flows though. My friend was putting far too much flow through his easypod and even after running it for 2 years the media was still clean and was getting new pond syndrome5000 Gallon Fibreglassed Pond With 54" x 27" Infinity Window

Mine are about 14m away, need decent pumps to get any real flow, especially when the return is over a shower

What do you mean by decent !!!

unless someone is running a 20000 vario to compare out put, it's a bit of a leap of faith.
depends what size pond as well as any lift to a shower?
i've got a aquaforte vario 10000 running on my small pond.
initially i thought i had a lot of capacity left in it as my pond is only 1000 gallons.
thinking i'd be running about 50%
it's pumping about 8 meters distance with a few bends, a 1.5 meter lift through a UV and then a heater.
but with those losses its running at 100% and i'm getting about 4300 ltrs per hour measured with a 1 litre jug and stopwatch where it returns to the pond.
i'm about to install a shower on mine and have bought a vario 20000 to run that but at only 3 meters with a 1.5 mtr lift. so i'm hoping for somewhere around 15000 ltrs/h at max.
with a 17mtr run you need a pump that can overcome those losses, but as your gravity fed, without any lift in height?
you should get a better return.
just try to keep the number of bends down to a minimum as they can restrict flow.
are you pumping through a UV, or heater ect...?
a pump with a higher mtrs/head lift rating will pump better at pressure to overcome those losses.

I'm going to set up a water level tomorrow and see if the head head will be as low as I expect.
My garden slopes off towards the back so could work out nicely.
My only other options will cut into the pond space.
Won't have a heater ,maybe a drop in uv .

So at the weekend I set up a water level in the garden.
The garden falls off 600mm to the potential filter house.
This is great as I wont have to dig down for the filters and wont have much of a head to pump back.
It does mean my bottom drain purge will have to be in a pit.
What are my potential problems with this set up ?
Ball valve or slide on the drain purge ?
I've attached a drawing.
drawing may or may not be to scale.

Also Im thinking of running solid 2" returns back to the pond area (the bulk of the 17m runs)
From there I would like to use 2" hose to get the returns to where I want them (one water fall and one TPR).

I doubt you’ll have a problem with the gravity feed, lay it to a slight fall maybe?
17m would be a pretty long way to pump water back I’d have thought so I’d probably allow for a quality pump with decent internals rather than a cheaper one.

Drawing looks fine for the pipe layout.
Definitely a ball valve on that purge drain, the slide valve will leak for sure, especially under that pressure. If it’s down a pit you might want to think about how you will reach it to open/close as I suspect you might be in for a soaking!
2” returns will help with the flow, and as others have said try to minimise bends etc.
I would also be careful with hose use underground as they can perish over time and you may need access to replace them. Personally I would go with solid pipe all the way.
Variable pumps are typically more efficient when working within their design capacities. Not sure what your pond volume is, but I would oversize and then throttle back the pump giving you some spare capacity. Do you have a pump already that you can try and gauge flow output on the new setup to help you make a decision?

Just re-read and see that you have 2 pumps already so hopefully you can test with one of these.
17m is fairly long in pond terms but it’s certainly do-able, I guess it just depends on the pump/power requirements.
Any way that you can setup a pipe / bucket test temporarily to satisfy your concern?

I'll have to set up something when it gets a bit warmer.
I wasn't planning on using the flexi hose underground.
Solid pipe up to the pond and then above ground some flexy to do the tricky bits.

Running heater at low temp?
Covering the pond with polycarb should be enough to stop water temps dipping below 6C for the most...
