    Leaking ball valve (advice)

I have noticed that when I operate my ball valve (both open and close) it leaks from the where the handle meets the body... has anyone else experienced this?

I am wondering if it’s because I maybe applying downward pressure as I am operating it due to it being in a pit. Once it’s open/closed there is no leak..

The valve in question is the kockbey koi 110mm valve

I think that some will just do that. It's the same with domestic plumbing fittings. I think the only decent valves are the double union ball valves at £85 each for 110mm / 4 inch.
2660 Gallons. 4" Bottom Drain and Skimmer. Draco Solum 16 Drum. Anoxic Filtration. Air lift returns.

    Leaking ball valve (advice)

Thanks for your inputLeaking ball valve (advice) the double union valves are huge. I picked the KK one as it was much more compact. It feels like a really substantial descent build quality just wondered if the leaking was normal

Hi Mike, I have had two of them and dont remember if they ever leaked but on both of them the handles seized up.
In the end it needed that much force to open or close them that the handle broke off so binned them both.
The 1.5ins or 2ins are fine though.
Hope yours will be ok for you though Mike.

Mine is firm to move but never have I thought it may snap.. been in place for 8 months

When I close it I never fully take it to 90 degrees as I did once and it was really hard to move.

I was toying with the idea of swapping it when I noticed the leak to a double union but It seemed like a lot of hassle. It is currently positioned about 3 foot below water level, I was wondering if there would be a way I could block the bottom drain off in the pond completely so I could swap it out and reposition some pipes.

How long are the filters/bio ok with no flow before it will cause me issues?

If you can get down in the pond and get the dome off. You need one of these. Rubber plug 4 inch or 110mm or what ever
    Your pipe size is.
Screw fix sell them. You insert it in the hole of bottom drain and turn the butterfly nut to expand and tighten.

I think screwfix sell them. When I tested my bottom drain for leaks at start of build I used two of them. One on the drain and one on the pipe. There pretty good.

I went 3 days. But my bio media stayed in
Pond water. I had the black alge. And had to empty the pond. Then refill. And within
48 hours my pond water parameters where back to normal.
But my pond pipework and filters was 3 years mature.

How deep is your pond. When I want to inspect my fish. I net them and put them in a large vat. To do this I drop the pond water to 1 1/2 deep. From 6 feet. Nightmare to catch from 7 feet up.

Get some Wellington boots on. Drop it down and get the dome of. put the plug in.
And away you go. Try it. A lot easier. That way. You save the netting of the fish.
Then top back up. And if you do the job in a couple of hours you save your bio. In pipes and pond.

Better then diveing and swimming in this weather

It’s 5.5 ft deep. How do you remove so much water? Add a pump in the pond?

on my pond I can dump through bottom drain to waste from my nexus to sewers. but for speed I just use a pump with hose on it to drains. after topping my vat up first. and when topping back up. I put the vat water back in the pond.

I've got a submersible pump and hose...drains my 4k gallon pond down super quick for maintenance, try and save as much water as possible (temporary pool):

    then pump back in..cheers

Blocking the bottom drain, a metre square minimum, bigger if you can, butyl liner, with the aid of a a long handle koi net, spread the liner over the net an lower it slowly down over the bottom drain, carefully pulling your net out of the way when the bottom drain is covered open the bottom drain, works for me.
