    Pond construction/membrane

my Pond developed a leak around a month ago, fish transferred into a temporary prefab and removed the existing pond (another prefab put in by the previous owners of our house).

I have purchased a liner and membrane to go under it, decided that ide make the pond bigger while I’m at it, spent 16 hours hand digging (made longer by the fact every spade ful I hit a brick/glass/stone - I think I’ve found what’s caused the original leak).

I’ve got it to a point where I’m happy with the size and depth.

I’ve removed as many bricks, stones etc. As I can find.

My original plan was an inch of sand then membrane then liner.

My only concern is that anything I’ve missed will protrude through when the weight of the water is on top and the sand/ soil shifts a little.

I was thinking of getting some cheep carpet tiles and laying them, then a cm of sand then membrane and liner.

To me it makes sense to use carpet tiles as they’re cheep, can often get them free when someone’s removed, they’re made of 100% plastic and therefore won’t rot, and they’re going to be strong enough to not let anything peirce through (hopefully)

Anybody used this approach? What’s your thoughts? I know people use chew carpet, my thought is this is just a more robust way of doing it.

Can’t see why it wouldn’t work to be honest. Alternatively a lot more hands and knees times removing stones and more sand?

    i feel your pain...
what passes for 'soil' in my garden is more like industrial waste.
the ground is full of stones, glass, brick bats, even broken concrete pillars with rebar sticking out!...i kid you not.

after making the bottom and sides as brick and glass free as i could
i lined my pond with an inch of sand in the bottom,
then 4 overlapping layers of plastic foil insulation that's quite tough that i got from amazon.
then 350gsm underlay, then the liner.
the carpet tiles can't hurt either though... anything to help prevent a sharp object poking through...

Bet you didn’t expect that Andy

Yep, don’t want to have anymore dig time, I’ve hit a clay layer (riddeled with rocks glass metal and other waste) and with the weather there’s about an inch of water at the bottom so it’s a bit of a pain.

Will give the carpet tiles a go as I should be able to pick some up FOC second hand on eBay or something where someone’s removing them from their office/kitchen.

Hopefully have everything in on my day off Wednesday.

Then I just have to dispose of the 4cubic metres or so of crap I’ve dug up.

Got the tiles down today, followed by a few inches of sand, the membranes then the liner.
Pond 70%filled. Going to leave it for a few days to let the sides fully settle etc then fill the remaining 30% and get fish transferred over.

Then I just need to dispose of the few tonne I’ve dug out and lay a new pavement.

    Lol...how about this one

My wife is obsessed with taking photos of herself while having a hot shower.

I think she may have selfie steam issues.
