Pond + filtration set up
Hi guys,
First of all, im a beginner in the KOI community. I always dreamed of having a pond and i think that now is the time.
Any help or advice will be appreciated.
I´m planning to build a pond in my garden - 5m x 3,5m with 2m depth. Concrete bottom with brick walls - around 20-30cm above the ground level. Maybe a stone cascading waterfall at one side for the effect. ( Sorry for not using inches - i live in Slovakia )
I want to use one or two bottom drains + skimmer.
The potential problem begins here :
I´d like to buy a combi filter - Drum + Bio chamber for Hel-X media. However, i´d like to have it hidden in the brick garden house on below picture. Water level will be around 20cm below the ground level in the garden house.
I was told by local reseller, that if i want to put it inside, i need to use the pump fed type. In this case there would be pumps outside in a chamber near the pond above water level to pump it to the filtration system.
The problem is, that after water goes thought the drum and bio chamber, it will only flow out by gravity, not under pressure.
Is there a way how to push the water back into the pond + waterfall? I´d really like to not dig another hole near the pond below water level to put gravity fed filters in, if i can use existing house for it.
Excavation in process + garden house below ( the house is 5m long, looks small on the photo )

Question two:
Do you guys have any experience with below filtration that was adviced to me by local reseller? Combi NEXT 30 - Fitreau

Thank you very much in advance for any tips
Best regards,

Feed the filters from a bottom drain and pump it back or you will be kicking yourself for years after

As already stated, the gravity feed to the filter is the best design.
A pump outside the pond and above water level???
If you go pumped it would be in the pond.
What about having more of the pond above ground so that you could work the levels better to the filter house.

Agree definitely as quoted by pug and Simon. You will end up regretting it.

Thank you guys for the advice. I saw some videos where people had it inside the shed above the water level and i hoped that i can use it as well. I will do the gravity set up as you say
Any advice regarding the combi drum filter i mentioned? Is anybody using it?

I’ll jump on google translate tomorrow but my initial impression is that the filter is too small, but I’ll check the specs.
Your pond will be approx 35k litres which is pretty big.

the drum is spot on for what your doing, you need to dig down in the filter house to make the drum sit level with pond water ,,,,,,andi

Thank you Andikoi,
Filter house is made of concrete and bricks, so i will need to dig another hole near the pond to place it at the water level
Would you advice to use one or two bottom drains on that lenght ? ( 5meters ). Should i use aeration inside the pond combined with bottom drain (2in1), separate it or will the moving bed be enough for water aeration ?
Sorry for potentially dumb questions, it´s my first pond and i wanna make correct on first try

I would put 2x bottom drains in. And the air
Pipes. For air pumps.
That way your covering yourself. Of not having regrets later on. You can always isolate them with valves. If you don t want them running. Be a nightmare to rip it up and put them in later on. Also your air in the pond helps circulation for bottom drain
Muck. It keeps it moving. Until it gets sucked in the drain to your drum. And two is better then one.
No questions are dumb mate. Keep asking away. Where here to help.

Thank you for your support guys!!
Still in the digging process.
i have 3 more question for you :
1, What´s the ideal thickness of concrete at the bottom? ( i will use rebar for added strenght.) I was thinking between 20-30 cm
2, As you can see, the edges of the pond aren´t straight lines, but we wanted to make it more natural - snake-ish. Are there any disadvantages of it?
I can see that walling will be more difficult, and there might be more sediment at the bottom. - this can be removed by correct returns set up.
3, We would like to have urn at the edge as small waterfall, one bigger waterfall and i saw that in other discussions, underwater returns were recommended. How many should i use?
Should i use 2 pumps ( gravity set up ) -1 would go 24/7 into returns, and 2nd one would be turned on when i´m home from work to enjoy the view, or should both go non-stop?
Thanks in advance,
Miro

Miro, mine is 5.75x4.75.1.70M approx., 3 drains and 3 side returns. all drains are air domes to assist with water movement and getting the waste in to the rain and filters. cutting the blocks takes some time and Iwould recommendusing a Stihl saw 300mm disk with a water attachment.
I use C30 ready mix on the base 250mm (check how far you need to pump it) or you can mix by hand.
You need to decide on the water turnover of the pool, most people will have their own opinion, but general rule is pool turnover every 60-90 minutes, with enough retention time in the filter for the bacteria to do it's job.

pug has a very impressive veg filter on his pond, have a look at some of his his youtube videos....
