14crazychris’s mini pond build mark 2

So as I’m sure most of you have seen my other thread creating a mini pond for Ranchu goldfish, I have now decided to upgrade. Although the new pond/ tank will only be a little larger in water volume, it will be a much more ridged and suitable for an indoor and outdoor application. It will have more of an aquarium style look, however, I’m not letting anything out the bag yet managed to get most of the supplies I needed this afternoon and have commenced the build, will do a price up at the end to give an idea of the price it was to build this system. The other mini pond will be used to spawn my fish and raise fry in so will still have a purpose.

Here’s some pictures of it so far

Yeah it’s a shame that the big Koi had to go but the new goldfish are a lot less stress and are really easy for me to keep so makes my life a bit easier.

So first job was to make the base for the new tank/pond. 2x2’s were used to make up the base frame which was then secured with a ply board. The underside will also have a plyboard attached but I need to get some insulation first!

So, next job was to get the back frame started. This was screwed together and then another ply board was attached to the back. Unfortunately the ply boards aren’t quite high enough so I need to add a little strip to the tops of each section.

After that was done I attached it to the base piece screwing outwards. The walls will be attached with 80mm screws from both sides.

Next job was to attached the side panels, this helped tie everything together. The ply board was placed onto the sides before the frames so that I could screw it deeper into the base

Then the frames where attached from both sides, as seen in the picture above. The gaps in the top where then filled with small lengths of ply which where glued and screwed on.

Today I attached the side frames and filled in the extra pieces of ply on the tops, starting to come together now. Internal measurements will be 1.2m x 0.6m x 0.6m. Holding around 430L when full to the brim.

Next job was to make the front panel, this was made from 3 separate frames which where all screwed together. This was then cladded on each side with plywood.

I used a jigsaw to cut out the shape from the plywood sheet which was then screwed onto the frame using 50mm wood screws.

Today I spent most of the day cutting up polystyrene for my insulation in all the frame holes, this was flipping messy haha. And then the frame was surrounded in plywood.

It weighs a bloody ton, there’s no way to lift it and I can barely pull up one side haha, let’s just say I might not be able to take this one with me when I move out haha

Next job was the the insulation, all the voids were filled with polystyrene to help with temperature swings. After that I finished the rest of the plyboard on the outside and capped the bottom and top, about 400 screws were used in the whole process.

So here is the finished product, I had to add wood filler and wood glue to all the cracks. I also sanded down the wood in areas where it was raised. Once painted I will then sand it down again before re painting.

Yeah I did actually, they are so flipping small still but I have 3 left haha (could be more but the water if very green and I haven’t seen any more recently). The 3 I have are now black and are taking crumb off the surface. I need to get them out of the blue Koi bowl they are in. Once they won’t fit through my little fry cage I can put them in the main pond and start feeding them more.

It’s going to be around 440L but probably about 400 without filling it to the brim. Enough room for another Ranchu or 2 next year.
