Easy really. I just bought cheap chinese 3d background panels from amazon or ebay and used clear resin. Just need to make sure the backgrounds are not made from a polystyrene based foam. Also get a lighter colour background as the resin made them look darker once applied.

Just added some more media to the moving bed. About 16 litres extra (10 aquacadabra 'similar to k1', 1 litre of k1, 5 litres of ebay special)

Plus a 200mm air stone, as the last one was a bit small.

A little progress. I've been busy with other house and garden projects, Happy Wife = Happy Life, but I planned on getting some fibreglass done on Friday and it went to plan... Sort of...
The forecast was supposed to be cooler temps on Friday. But it was still pretty warm and made life a bit tricky. Especially as this was my first fibreglassing attempts for a while. The pots were going off very fast but I managed to keep going with smaller pots and low hardner ratio. It just meant it was all done at pace and I didn't have enough time (or patience) to do the undersides of the top frame, so that'll have to be done another day.
Progress is progress though and it is feeling rock solid now around the window apertures.

I even found the ideal box for the DIY drum filter. Its a fibreglass water tank that I rescued off the bin men. I've been looking for something exactly like this!
It's 70 gallons and the washing machine drum fits in perfectly!

Doesn't look massively different but the underside of the top frame is now fibreglassed too.

Haven't really touched the drum yet John, but I think I have nearly all the bits to make a start on it. But that won't be until after the pond is up and running though. It will have a sieve to start with which I'll switch out for the drum when it's ready.

I made one from a washing machine drum and it worked well, but as it was for my grow on and only 350 gals I scrapped it and made a smaller drum.
Have you the bearings and pully?

Yes, that all got salvaged from the washing machine.

I've done a little bit today. I sanded off any sharp nibs from my work the other day and got the apertures prepped ready for fibreglassing the frame. Then a bit of head scratching as to what to do for the window frame. I had some bits off the grp lid I cut up that I was going to use but it's all twisted up and looks more effort than it's worth so I'm going to start a fresh. This means I need to make a form to fibreglass to, that is straight, has a nice flat surface to replicate the window glass and can be removed when the fibreglass has set. Which is simple...
...unless you're tight like me and have limited materials. So...
I had some wood left that was long enough (just about). (1785 x 435 is the gap for the small window and 2450 x 435 for the big one). However it's a bit bent and twisted. I have some angle iron which is straight but no single piece is long enough for the big window. So I have screwed the steel to the wood to keep it straight and it looks like it will work. So I made the 4 uprights and it looks like it will work. There is more fettling to do to clamp it on level and straight before I tape it up and fibreglass to it but nothing difficult, hopefully.

I also scavenged 3 sheets of 50mm insulation boards to insulate the rest of the pond, which is another box ticked as that was holding progress up too.

...yes another thing I was too tight to buy.

I finished the forms for the window frames today and took my time to level it all up and clamp it down.
It's got black gaffa tape on the wood so it releases once the grp has gone off.

Then I did the first pass of fibreglass and waited for it to go off.

Then I moved the clamps and filled in the gaps.
It will all need to be beefed up with a few more layers but I'm happy that the basic shape will be there to work to now.

Round 2. It doesn't quite look thick enough yet so I suspect there will be a round 3.

I had two more goes at it today.
That should be thick enough now. 8 or so layers of 450gsm chopped strand mat. It's at least 10mm - more where the layers of mat have over lapped.
Just got to tidy it all up now.
