Good and bad today. The posts are in, but i ordered 110mm pipe 90 bend and ball valve. I checked the fit of the pipe in the 90 and in the valve. No issues. The bottom didn't fit. The supplier, in their 'wisdom' had sent me 4". I had already cut the pipe and scuffed up the pipe ends and fittings ready for glueing. So I've ordered the 110 to 4" converter and a bit of pipe. Not impressed as I wanted that in the ground today, plus I'd already put glue inside the bottom drain before offering the pipe up. School boy error! So I have that to laboriously sand that out now. After I realised my issue I wiped it all round with alcohol cleaner, so fingers crossed its not too bad.

.... I'll give you a clue:
The vertical pipe should have a ball valve on it. I have glued the flange on but...2660 Gallons. 4" Bottom Drain and Skimmer. Draco Solum 16 Drum. Anoxic Filtration. Air lift returns.

Great progress . What is the purpose of the posts and grave boards for the corner?

They're just there for peace of mind. The fence posts and gravel boards just act as a bit of a retaining wall. The fence line is a 14ft bush and I was worried about the earth moving at some point. I may even back fill behind the boards with some rebar and concrete, just to make sure.

Not sleepers. The plan has changed a fair bit over the course of this thread. Mainly in an effort to keep costs down to below £1000 for the whole build. Which is more or less on track. The pond will be this 1000gallon tub, but enlarged. Currently it is 264cm by 150cm. I am going to cut the wood out of it, some of which is rotten anyway, and cut it in half. It will then be extended to 264cm by 420cm (2500gallons) with new timber and re fibreglassed. Plus two Windows. It will be insulated and cladded. I have a sieve to go on, with a view to replaceing that with a DIY drum at some point later on, DIY moving bed, DIY static, and hopefully some anoxic and veg filter.

The turtle seemed happy on Island mk1 but it was a bit precarious and he didn't have much room. So...
Floating Turtle Island mk2.
A plastic bread tray, gravel, rocks and plants, plenty of live food amongst it. Its still very murky in there, where I've been pulling the plants around, but the fish seem fascinated by it.
Its only 45cm by 30cm, but enough for him to have a root around. He's lurking out the back after all the drama.

I didn't know europe had turtles? Lol.
Previous owner of this one (common musk) said he'd been outside for 5 years at least with no intervention.he didn't even know if it was still in the pond until we dropped the water to net the koi.Last edited by Alburglar; 07-04-2020 at 06:50 PM.

I think I've managed to do it ok, but is there a special sized stilson grip or some other tool for getting these 4" ball valves done up tight? It's going to be tricky to get to the bottom one, if it leaks, when the pond is in position.
... The collars are 200mm / 8inch so I will find something that goes that big.

So I finished fettling with the bottom drain ball valve today, getting a final quater turn, past hand tight, using a ratchet strap wrapped round it.
Following advice on another thread, if I need to tighten it a bit more, when the ponds in position I can tap the collar round with a large screwdriver and hammer.

Running heater at low temp?
Covering the pond with polycarb should be enough to stop water temps dipping below 6C for the most...
