Great job Mabbs, will take a large pump to fill that water fall but will be awsome.
I can see myself sitting there with my drink on your table and enjoying the pond views.

Time to waken up and get it finished for the spring then - - - enjoy.

Thanks for the comments. Yes certainly want it done for spring. Lots of work to do and access from road/material drop off is a good walk. Estimate I am going to need about 10 ton of York stone boulders

Hello and welcome to the forum, your pond location looks great and I think you will be able to create a fantastic backdrop to your pond. I recently built a pond on a slope but only 10000 litre not gallons. Listening to the bottom drain discussion, I wasn’t planning on one till I read posts on here and eventually changed my mind and it’s the best thing I ever did. We have two ponds the koi pond gravity fed with bottom drain and a small goldfish pond with a submersible pump/filter. The goldfish pond is a nightmare and the pump/filter unit needs cleaning a couple of times a week in summer just to maintain a flow of water and it’s a foul job ! The koi pond is far more pleasant to do as it’s a simple Nexus filter clean. As the pump is pumping the clean water out rather than the dirty water in. I have overhanging trees and lots of leaves, koi pond has been fine through autumn and winter but goldfish pond has required intensive maintenance due to the leaves.
Good luck and looking forward to seeing more progress updates.

Looking really good, keep the updates coming !

Make sure you do your research on the pump, being an electrician, the first thing I looked at was the energy consumption and I was shocked at the consumption of some of the pumps, many would cost you a small fortune in electricity bills !!

The waterfall will be separate away from the rest of the filtration , there will be a pump just to supply this taking from the pond up to the top of the waterfall then back down into the pond, so it wont be on 24/7.....more like only when we are in that area - BBQ etc. My local Koi shop has suggested a 2kw/2Hp swimming pool pump as the waterfall is 2.4m wide and 3m from pond to top.

    Hi All,

Just a quick update. Been working hard on the pond over the past month and the filtration is pretty much completed - just waiting for a few more fittings to be delivered this week. I will hopefully post full pics of the completed system later this week. All electrics are now in for everything - filtration, lighting in and around the pond, landscaping - so the next job to do will be putting the liner in and filling up with water !!!!!

Just thought I would post some external pics of the filter 'pit'. I have installed a jib as the lid weighs about 50kg and was pain for me to keep sliding it off. It works really well. Will post a small video of it later in operation.

I will be moving the jib electrics to the wall when the parts arrive !!

Everything now is pretty much done so ordered the liner today which unfortunately is on a 3 week lead time. Apart from arranging the final boulders and the coping stones on the sleeper front I am pretty much all done..... So now the long wait until the liner arrives.

A few final pics. This is the lid for the filter pit, which has worked very well. I had to modify the controls as I didn't like the hand held unit, but it makes access really easy.

With regards to equipment, filters etc. The final water volume I think will be below 10,000 gallons. Starting this project over a year ago, taking advice I think has left things tight with regards water volume flow, but I can still turn over the water volume once every 2-3 hours easily. So, below is what I have:

1 x 4" drain and 1 x 4" skimmer fed into combi drum. In hindsight 2 bottom drains would have been better and give more flexibility, but it still gives me enough recommended flow through the filter.

Filtreau combi drum unit good for up to 30,000 ltrs/hr so more than adequate. Will have 125 lts of K1, auo top up and overflow. Fully automated, so shouldn't need much input from me. Waste goes direct to mains drain.

1 x 2" return. Again should have put 2 returns in to get the efficency of flow. I have purchased a very good powerful variable pump (Badu touch) which will give a great pressure and flow into the pond for movement. Its good for 30,000 ltrs per hour, and being a powerful pump I should get that but I am looking to run at 20,000 ltrs/hr.

High pressure flushing pump for drum

    110 w EA UV

Highblow 60 air pump for bio chamber

100 ltr air pump for pond

For the waterfall I have a separate 2hp pump which is independant to filteration and can be run as and when I want to.

I have managed to keep all the pumps below the water level so that are always flooded and are valved either side for maintenence. The cost of the pipework plumbing has been a bit of a surprise!!

All in all, I am pretty happy with what I have. I would have liked the pit to have been bigger as its a bit tight in there, but I was governed buy the esthetics and location of it being hidden under the decking. Few more pics of the filter pit to follow.

Fitted the underlay and 1mm epdm liner today - was a lot harder work than i thought. Going to need another ton of yorkstone to finish waterfall, so that will be 15 ton in total. Just waiting for silicone to fully dry on drain and returns etc, and then will fill up filter and all water lines to test. If all goes well should be filling up from Friday. I've ordered the coping stones for the front edge which should be here next week...... Nearly done!!
