There are so many ways to keep and view fish
Each person to their own
There are clinical bare tanks/ponds with amazing "systems" that some like
and you have gone the way of a natural look, personally my favourite too
your fish will let you know if they like it and it works .... have you had many deaths ??
I think not so then it works, lots of planting may not be to some peoples taste however I have lots of plants as that is what a garden is, plants and greenery and as we know they make a great filter.
A friend of mine puts full barley bales in his pond and gets a diver in every couple of years to do maintenance hahahaha
Only drawback you never see half the fish but with the numbers you talk about it is never gonna look empty
Dudley if you like it thats all that counts
By the way I love it too
Good job pal1000 gal

Love it mate my garden would not allow such a natural looking pond, but I'm pretty sure if mine was like yours, I'd have gone down the same route! Looks fantastic

dudley that is a beautiful looking pond, i like the natural look and you have certainly nailed that, what made you choose a bog filter ? did you start out with mechanical or straight into a bog? i added a small bog recently and really wish i had a larger one (maybe next year) and the fish look awesome. top job

Hi, no deaths since I put the fish in the pond as Tosia.
My wife is the gardener, and we have a paddock at the rear and farmland beyond that. The house has a cottage feel and as much as I would like a conventional above ground koi pool so I can see the fish properly it just wouldn’t work in my garden.
The tosia did manage to squeeze into my marginal planting beds and stir up the clay, but once they got to Nesai they then couldn’t get through the gaps in rock walls separating fish swim area and the marginals.
Other wildlife has been an issue, this summer I have had to shoo wild ducks off in the morning, they upset the koi, when they visit and the koi sit on the bottom for the rest of the day. Lol.
Water quality has been fantastic. And I’m really pleased about that as it’s my first koi pond and I’ve not gone the nexus type route.
I think rearing the fry in a tank, taught me a lot. I was then monitoring and recording the water quality several times a day. But 2years is still early days for this pond. I still have my fingers crossed.
Lessons learnt, put in a proper bottom drain, I have a retro fit bottom drain on my liner, but it’s a good bowl shape pond so crap settles onto the drain and I vacuum it as well.
Also, My pump has to lift my water about 2m to get it from bottom of pond to top of wetland filter, and it gravity drops back to the pond. So I use a lot more power than if I simply pumped water out of a filter and back into the pond with gravity pushing it to the filter via a bottom drain. But of course I cant do that with my set up.
But that said, I use a vario pump and it’s turned down, as the flow through the wetland doesn’t need to be quick.
In the winter, I do not pump from bottom drain, I take water from about 300mm below surface to the wetland and pump is on minimum setting, so as to leave the bottom calm and warmer for fish. I also run an air line of course.

Pond build has started properly now.
Well hi guys.
Nice to see a lot of the same names on the site posting still.
I’ve been away for a while, had a few medical issues, some surgery etc, now almost better, still have one hip to replace, but semi retired now however still no time.
If you recall this was my first venture into koi, building a pond etc. And jumped straight in at the deep end buying and rearing fry, and learning the hard way.
Well my pond has established beautifully, just as I planned, and I know it’s not a koi pond as such it a natural pond. But the fish are thriving. Growing well, possibly not grown as fast as koi can, but I don’t feed loads. However they must be happy as my babies became adults this weekend and started spawning. I’ll try attach a video below
.
Well all the best, to you all. I do wonder how you are all coping with the electric prices now, and keeping these ponds going. I know I’m struggling. Bye for now, SteveM.

Pond build has started properly now.
Thanks, I bought 100 fry from New Forest Koi a few years ago when I built the pond. Don’t still have 100 of course, natural losses at the beginning and then the heron. They are a bit big for the heron now. Last time the heron grabbed one he couldn’t fly away. I chased it around the paddock until he let it go and flew off. Fish died unfortunately.
Anyway it’s nature, I like the heron to look at, and we now have those water spray scarecrow things. I think they work.
But this is the first season for spawning and fortunately the pond has established beautifully so plenty of floating plants to spawn on.
I have lifted some of the plants that were laden with eggs now and put in a 500L tank. Obviously Ill be lucky any in the pond will survive even with all the planted areas. Talking of which, the bog areas and plant life really helps filtration and polishes the water quality. I thought the koi would eat all the plants but they struggle to control it. I’m manually thinning it out like crazy.
