That's what I did last year, wrapped the mesh covers in bubble wrap.

But at the end of winter it's a shame to rip it all off and bin 100 metres of bubble wrap.

I thought the bubble wrap tarp sandwich held down with bungee cords would be a simple long term solution that's easily removed and stored for next year. Hopefully it will be a long term solution once I get it right.

I got my polycarbonate for free, went to a local PVC window supplier and asked if they had any old poly from a conservatory roof, they said help yourself mate, didn't have to say that twice quick jetwash and it's fine.

    Sleeper Pond Extension!

Also noticed one of the old sleepers has a damp patch where one of the returns must be leaking slightly (not from the Koi pond side, but the other side). I therefore decided to treat the tops and inside sides of the sleepers with Cuprinol.

To look at, the pond just looks the same as yesterday where the sleepers were resting in place, but at least now they're all secured, and I've secured them significantly more than I did last time with brackets on the corners and on all the joins. 8 pieces of 16mm rebar (in addition to the rebar in the concrete collar) and around 15x 250mm timberlok screws.

Hopefully should get the sand base and underlay down before darkness tonight, leaving tomorrow to install the liner.

After all that's done, gotta change the water on the Nexus and another 50% water change on the pool as I battle the ammonia!
Just reading through your thread mate as my build is soon approaching, am I right in thinking you used different rebar on the 2nd build as to the first one? As on ya first build the rebar was the bar itself with a bracket welded on? And on this discription sounds like just regular bar rebar? Also what concrete is best, just a high strength one? And how did you repair the damaged collar from trying to fit the rebar? Ta mate ?

    Hi mate,

On first build the pond was only 3m x 2.4m so I didn't feel rebar was required and simply fitted these anchors which are freely available online:

    31uE6pMgbsL._SY450_.jpg

The pond extension took it to 4.7m x 2.4m so I felt proper rebar was then required, so I laid the concrete collar, let it set, then laid the sleepers on top, then drilled through the sleepers and the collar, then hammered in 16mm rebar all the way around the pond.

I repaired the damaged collar using resin injection and so far the repair has held solid despite all the heavy rain softening the ground around it. I'm not confident its a permanent fix so keeping an eye on it and will make a decision whether to do a big repair when weather warms up.

To avoid ending up in my situation you can put rebar in the concrete collar as you pour it, both vertically hammered into the ground and horizontally around the collar (especially the corners), just mark the locations of the rebar in the collar so you don't end up trying to drill through it when rebarring vertically through the sleepers (if you are using sleepers).

Very tempting.... But simply don't have the energy to go through another build and deal with the aftermath.... Took months to get grass to grow back and to clean all the clay off the patios. Garden was a right mess and I ached for weeks.

Also I'm now working on a full kitchen renovation, that'll keep me busy till march.

I'm not the best person to ask about concrete.... Every mix I do seems to be a slightly different colour to the last.

For my collar I did 1 shovel concrete to 3 shovels of sharp and. Didn't use any ballast in the mix but did put loads of hard core down for the base and sprinkled a bit of gravel between layers.
