Yep, she’s a common carp. No idea how she got in the original pond but she’s an interesting fish to have in the new one. Nice contrast with all the colourful Koi.

Nice one mate. Looking good. And your right about NPS. You learn a lot of NPS.
The fish look at home. And I love the common carp.

Yeh, she’s a cool fish. Wouldn’t go out and buy a common but she’s got a back story and that’s what makes her special.

Can’t quite believe I’m at this point of shipping the Koi over. Seems like only yesterday I was asking a million questions of you and the guys on here about WTF I should be doing regard the build.

    Exciting times now!!!

I’ll be testing the water tomorrow to see what’s occurring and if I need to intervene re some NPS creeping back in. I’m sure it will at some point, but I’m ready. Gray's Pond Build Diary

Nice one. Yeah mate soon passed. The time since you started the build mate.
And here you are adding the koi and fish from your family lol.
    Great times. Good on yeah.
Watch the water parameters. And keep an eye on there actions mate.
I had two leap the other day. Then for two days nothing. Made me test the water parameters. And do a water change.
All good. I think it was to do with water temps. That night had been 7c. Your doing it the right way though. Only adding the fish one at a time. So as not to shock the system. Instead of throwing them all in the pond in a oner
    Enjoy mate

Hope those leaps you saw were just the temp drop and nothing else?

It’s funny you say about leaps, the new large Koi had a jump the other day. Nothing since but she jumped right in front of my eyes. Splashed water everywhere! So I’ve been watching her carefully since.

I’ve also kept an eye on the first Koi I brought over and he’s not looking brilliant. As of a few days ago he’s seeming very lethargic, not feeding (has a go but not with any gusto) and is also flashing.

And then yesterday, when I sat to watch him, I have now seen a number of others flashing too...

They’re all still eating but something is clearly irritating them that’s not the water as the parameters are spot on.

No gasping at the surface just something is really itching a few of them. The new, large orange Koi has had a few flicks and flashes too.

So, I binned that scope I inherited, just too old to work and bought an Apex Practitioner with Mini Grab camera and also a case to chuck it all in. Arrives tomorrow so I’ll be giving the ones who’ve flashed a wee scrape.

I’ve got all your notes from before about how to approach the checks but what about the actually scrape?

How do I go about this? Net them and then cotton bud some mucus or something different?

Scrape sound so harsh as a word so I’m pretty sure I don’t need a kitchen knife!!! Gray's Pond Build DiaryGray's Pond Build Diary

All pointers from anyone gratefully received!

It could be a lot of things. That has brought the flashing on. Stressed because of being moved. Stressed new pond. Stressed different food. Your system. I turned my air of yesterday. They went nuts. So put it back on calm again.

When you bowl them for a scrape. Have everything prepared. Scope out. I use lolly sticks. Or plastic like a credit card. Have the water in the bowl halfway up the fish
So all the top of the body is out the water
I find there easy to handle that way.
I also leave them in my net in the bowl. Then scrape the top.
When I do the underside of the fish I spin it around a couple of times. Then scrape.
    The underside.
You will get the odd fish that will fight it.
I take some water out. So he can t swim if that makes sense.
I do two scrapes per fish. Top and side or belly. Then transfare the mucus to the slide
Cover slip. And put some water on the mucus. Like a crying tear s worth. A dot.
Then put the other cover slip on top. And then scope. The water tear drop makes it last longer.
If that makes sense. I have done them with out the water.
Forgot scrape from head to tail. Hope this helps mate. That's how I do it .overs may do it a better way. Works for me.

Thanks as always Freddy, sound advice.

The scope & gear arrived today so I’ll be getting it out tomorrow to take a look.

There’s definitely some grey appearing on the newer Koi that I put in at the weekend, much like the other one out in before, and on reading around Costia can do this.

I’m not going to guess though, going to scrape and scope to see what I can find and then treat if needed.

I bought the camera that plugs into the laptop from the scope so hopefully that’ll help me see better and also get some pics to share prior to treating.

Some of the existing Koi have started to have a flash too, only two, so I’ll bowl and scrape them as well to see what’s up.

At least my parameters are looking good as that’s one thing out of the equation.

Will update when I know more!

    Gray's Pond Build Diary

I got my scope & Mac up and running and couldn’t see anything of note. A couple of Koi have carp pox so I’m wondering if that could be the only issue.

I’ll keep an eye on it but everything is well regards the parameters and feeding. Curious.

Had to move the last two Koi in over the weekend. The timing wasn’t ideal but needs must. They’re getting on well though.

The Gold Ogon makes all my ‘large Koi’ look like minnows now... Having only ever seen him from the top for 30+ years it’s awesome seeing the big lad glide past the window and nearly fill the bloody thing!!!

I’ll get some pics and post them when the rain stops.

When I netted him I took a rough guess at the size, didn’t want to hold up proceedings by measuring him, but he’s about 2-2.5ft long... God knows what he weighs but he’s a heavy chap. It took three of us to lift him safely. Thank god the move is now all over and the Koi are all fine and well. This lot are going to cost me a few quid to keep fed!!!!

The final two I brought over this weekend were the last of the five I inherited. Funny to see them crowd around their three other buddies who I’d brought over a few weeks before. Clearly fish do have a memory more than two seconds as some say as they clearly recognised each other as they shoaled around together.

Time to keep a very close eye on the parameters to make sure I catch any further NPS that might crop up.

I didn’t scrape the new ones. I wanted to get them in there ASAP to minimise the stress. Should I have done?

Hi Gray, Good to hear your move went ok did you use oxygen in the end?
I would just let them settle down for a while as you dont want to stress them any more than necessary, they do say a little salt helps for them to settle but maybe you dont want to go down that route.
You have waited a long time for this so hope all goes well, keep us updated.

Maybe I am wrong. But I would have done.
When I add any new fish in the pond. They get a scrape. Just to make sure. I am maybe over cautious. Before I learnt how to scrape and scope. I got Lee. To do them before adding.
But now I have the qt grow on they go in there first lol.
Glad you got them home and in safely mate.
That large one in the window sounds good to look at. When viewing.
You have achieved your goal mate.
    Respect to you for that

    Hi all,

Can’t believe it’s been so long since I updated my thread. Time flies.

I’ve kept an eye on the forum over the months but just haven’t done anything to the pond over the winter and early part of the year so had nothing to report.

    Until now...

Took a day off today as I had a list of pond jobs to sort. Pleased to say that I nailed all of them by 5pm and then supped a cider before a nice fish & chip dinner. A great day!

Here was my list for the day:

    - fit 20,000 ltr/hr Jebao variable pump
    - deep clean Nexus & sieve
    - swap out two return leg leaky rubber boots for silicone hose
    - swap out 3” to 2” leaky boot from skimmer
    - swap out the two 55w UV bulbs for new ones
    - big water change to ready for the summer.

I’ve had the Jebao variable 20,000 pump for months but haven’t had the chance to fit it. It’s now in place and running at near full power and drinking only 190watts versus my old Sequence pump that was needing 240watts. The Jebao is pushing the water pretty much like the Sequence, slightly quicker at the moment.

Hoping it doesn’t miss a beat just like the Sequence hasn’t for two years.

I’m so pleased to have swapped out the final rubber boots in my filter house for silicone hose now. One boot I did wonder about, because it looked fine, so thought I might leave it to get the value out of it.

    How wrong I was!!!!

Took the decision to just change it anyway as I had the return line disconnected where it was. Bloody glad I did because the backside of it was knackered.

I would’ve had very wet feet, one day soon, if I hadn’t changed it. Started to perish.

I also had three other perished boots too - skimmer reducer and two either side of the pump isolator. Those two have been changed for silicone too and it all looks nice and blue in my filter house! Sadly I had to just swap the reducer to another rubber one.

Totally leak free now which is great.

I also gave the Nexus 320 and sieve a mighty good clean. They are both looking brand new once again.

My PH was creeping a little higher than I’d like (8.5) but my KH was solid at 6-7. I’ve done a decent water change today too, maybe 40%, so hoping this’ll help the PH go down as my tap water, via a charcoal filter, is 7.

While all this was going on I fitted a new tap for the pond top up and cleaning routine that sits nearby the pond. Had this planned for an age but never got round to it. Thankfully it’s now sorted.

Checked all the Koi as well, seeing as the water level was low, and they all look good. They’ve overwintered well and are feeding about 4 times a day at the mo. I’ve been lucky not to have any nasty bugs so far.

Next job on the list is to build up the filter house so it’s a full height area but that’s gonna have to wait until the summer as I’ve got jobs on the house to do.

We’ve laid the patio all round the pond (and house) now so it’s looking nice (finally!) instead of being a mud bog...

Final job was to swap out the two 55w bulbs on my EA 110 UV line. Took 5mins.

All in all, a good day of pond work. Everything went without a hitch which is bloody surprising for when I do DIY jobs. Something usually throws a spanner in the works but not today. Gray's Pond Build DiaryGray's Pond Build DiaryGray's Pond Build Diary

The water is a slightly bitty due to messing about with the pond but it’s clearing tonight now.

Looking great there, satisfying when all goes to plan! Did you buy a long length of silicon hose, and cut down into lengths needed, where did you get hold of it? Thx
