no mate i used my heat welder, but you could just melt a thin strip of plastic pipe and seal the holes over with that, then files them down smooth...

i'd have a think about using a 600w aquarium heater... i've just used 2 x 400w to heat my QT pond and they ain't cheap... a 600w aquarium heater...

as long as you run 12k-14k of water through it an hour it should stay relatively clean, but you want a purge pipe with about a meter of head so it...
