Looking for help with selection
Hi I am looking for help in Kent. TN27 area, for your bearings Pluckley, Smarden, Charing, Hothfield, Headcorn Lenham, are close to me.
I am selecting the best of my koi for a thinning out process.
I reared 100+ fry but I am no koi expert, I currently have around 70 Sansai to go through. I know which ones I like, and that’s the most important thing really, if I’m not showing, but there maybe something I am missing on fish confirmation and marking that makes a less appealing specimen to me, still worth keeping. I think I need to get down to 10-20 for my pond. I will never catch or even possibly see my rejects after selection as they are going in a large clay pond, so don’t want to reject something good as they will be gone for good. .
My plan is to part empty my pond, put all the fish in a reasonably sized above ground childs swimming pool, one of those Bestway things, then hopefully have someone local who can pop over and look over the fish to point out the best and rubbish. I can then put rejects into the clay pond about 100’ away and return the good ones to my koi pond.
So I’m just wondering if there is a koi keeper on here, who lives near me that would be kind enough to help with the selection when I have the fish out the pond?
Thanks Steve.

I’m in the a South West so nowhere near you I’m afraid.
But I would happily give an opinion of any if you put photos of them here.
Have you already selected out/ culled any with mouth or fin deformities?2016 new 6000 gallon pond

Hi Feline
I was lucky with the order from New Forrest Koi that none of the fry had physical deformities. I have as you will probably remember from the grow tank posts of mine had some casualties, and I have subsequently removed some of the less interesting. But I still have a lot of the same. Photographing to get side images from an in ground pond is not easy, and having about 70 also complicates it. When I get them out and into a holding tank one will then get a good look at them, and good photos, but I could not keep them in it long enough to get feedback from on here as to what is good and bad really. Or could I? I wonder how long I could have them in a Bestway pool with air pump and filter!!!! I will think about those logistics.
Thank you. Steve.

I think you could have them in the paddling pool for a couple of days so long as it’s not going to get cold in there while you got feedback on them? In an ideal world bowl them in small groups in a blue bowl for their photos (from above) and number them on the pics

You have several nice Shusui and Asagi on your photos by the way.
The orange/red colour tends to extend upwards on their sides as they get older- so the ones with the most pale blue on their backs currently with nice symmetrical pattern on each side will be the ones that do best moving forwards.2016 new 6000 gallon pond

For example just looking at this photo alone this is what I would personally choose. But your own personal tastes are the most important here really!

there is some good info about koi development on Adam Byers site - there are some articles where he tracked and recorded the development of koi.
But actually what you are doing is the same as what most of us do when we buy fish - go to a dealers and peer into a tank of hundreds of fish to select "the one" except you have the luxury of picking out 10/20. My advice is go with your instincts and pick the ones you like the look of and want to see in your pond every day. But definitely bowl them up for the final choice.

The best advice in all of the above is to keep what you like, we won’t be looking at them every day, you will and it’s not about winning prizes

Agree. It's all about your own choice. You will see them every day. If you like keep.

No, I am told by New Forest Koi, who supplied the fry they are Beni Komunryu
It is red on the underside. This specimen lacs the white on the body but has white in its pectoral fins. I do actually like it, the black is a weird black, very hard to describe, as it has a red pigment that does sort of show through when up close. The red spots on the top of the head have only recently started breaking completely through the black. There is another, also in that same image you mention, the one surfacing to the right of this one, It has white on the underside and mouth, and with the reddish pigment in the black.
I think this type of koi is unusual as it changes colours.

Ok thank for your help in this fish identification process.
This is now the last one.
Not a good photo as the wife took it in a hurry.
But can you put a name to this one please?
