First ever koi
Hi all, off today to buy my first koi, planning on taking the advice from the guys at UK Nishikigoi but would like to hear people’s opinions on best varieties for a beginner, size and quantity to introduce to start.
Pond is circa 12’000 litres, 4.5 ft deep, gravity system with Nexus 220.

As a beginner, who made a hash of it first time round, I would say be very aware of "new pond syndrome" and start slow. Ideally "fishless cycle" using Ammonia to start filters off before adding the fish. If you cant wait 6-8 weeks just add a few and let things settle down before adding more.
Good luck though and enjoy your new pond/hole in ground where you throw money.

As Alan said. Fushless cycle is the quickest
Way to go.
But myself I went the fish in the pond way.
So NPS is the one to watch. Start of with just a couple of fish and feed sparingly.
And you will need a water testing kit
I use API freshwater master test kit.
There is plenty of test kits. Out there
Don t make the mistake of adding to many fish to quickly.
And go to manky sanke site to learn
Fishless cycleing is there as well
Good water guide; pt 1

Depends what you want to spend,I would go for tosai 6ins and see them develop but not too many to start with maybe 4 to 6 and feed very sparingly.
They will be able to advise you there Mark, and dont forget our pictures.John

UK nishigoi in Sutton manner St Helen's? If so your in safe hands they are the only supplier I use and always get a great quality fish for great price, try to get the owner to deal with you if possible he is too younger bald one lol, I suggest looking up stairs to give you a better idea of what your fish are going to become as they change a great deal over time, tell him Steve Jones recommended a visit and you will be well looked after , good luck with your choices

Thanks guys. Went to UK Nishikigoi yesterday. On their advice we chose 6 Tosai1x Ginrin Orenji Ogon, 1x Beni Kikokuryu, 2x Kikusui, 1x Ginrin Chagoi and 1x Showa. Yes Steve the one in Sutton Manor. Dealt with John and too be fair he spent ages with us getting lots of fish in the tubs for us to choose and inspected every fish making sure there were no marks, split fins etc. Feeding very small amounts twice a day for now with all 6 coming up for food this morning.

Thanks John.
That's the plan, look after these closely monitoring water parameters and feed levels with the view to adding more fish next spring/summer.
We narrowed the Chagoi down to two, the one we rejected was bigger and paler but the scales on this one are lovely and hopefully it will be a stunning fish when its bigger.
I will look at my calendar and see when i'm in over the next few week ends as you will have to come over and take a look.
